on an author who lived in West Virginia at the turn of the 19th Century an author who excelled in using the English language and formulating a plot. Knowledge about his life will give insight into his creativity and the quantity and quality of his writing. FRANK R. STOCKTON’S PRIVATE LIFE Pertinent Facts Francis Richard Stockton (1834-1902) was born in Philadelphia on April 5, 1834. His father, a Biblical scholar, William Smith Stockton, was of English descent and his mother, Emily Hepzibeth Drean Stockton, had ancestors who were English, French and Irish. His wife, Marian, claimed that Stockton’s writing was affected by his genes. She theorized "that three nationalities were combined in his stories: the peculiar kind of inventiveness of the French; the point of view and the humor that we find in the old English humorists; and the capacity of the Irish for comical situations." Etching by Jacques Reich from a photograph from The Captain's Toll-Gate
Mary Ann (Marian in later years) Edwards Tuttle
grew up in South Carolina and met Frank R. Stockton when she came to teach English at a school established by Stockton’s mother called the West Philadelphia School for Young Ladies. They were married on April 30, 1860.
