First Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church Chicago, Illinois
Originally known as Ev. Lutherische Zions Kirche, this German-speaking congregation was organized February 18, 1868. It was a daughter congregation of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, and a member of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.
Because of the steady growth of the congregation and of the need of more seating room, the congregation decided to enlarge and remodel the first church, at a cost of S12,000.00. The building was placed upon a stone foundation, its roof slated and the walls were brick-veneered. The entire front, together with the steeple, were removed and a new structure - including steeple - built to provide more room for the growing congregation. The remodeled church building was dedicated on the First Sunday in Advent, 1886,
The organ, which had been on display at the 1886 Industrial Exposition in Minneapolis, was acquired from the Barkhoff Organ Co. of Salem, Ohio, for $2,000.00.
Prior to October, 1868 midweek worship services were held in the Immanuel Christian Day School located on 19th Place, between Halsted and Union, by Rev. P. Beyer, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church, then located on Taylor and Brown (Sangamon) Streets. This school building had been erected on 19th Place, to provide the children attending with greater safety by avoiding the dangerous crossing of railroad tracks. In 1865 a four room school building for the Zion Lutheran School was built on the corner of Union and 21st Streets. In 1878, property was purchased at the corner of Loomis Street and Zion Place (now called 18th Place) and the two-story school building was moved to the new site. In 1882 another two-story brick building was erected on the same site and the frame building was converted into a teachers' residence. At its peak the school enrollment was 915 children with 9 teachers. The school was closed in 1924 and the buildings sold.

US Custom House:
The Four Continents , Sculptor: Daniel Chester French, 1903-1907.
"As one faces the Custom House, the allegorical groups from left to right are Asia America Europe , and Africa .... The artist represents Asia as the "mother of religion," a Buddha-like figure absorbed in a meditative trance. She holds a sacred lotus flower with a serpent wrapped around the stem in her right hand, a statuette of Buddha rests on her lap, and her feet rest on a footstool supported by human skulls. The sculptor contrasts the figure's composure and voluptuous forms with the emaciated body of the man bent forward in supplication and the prostrate youth at her feet. ...
Africa, veiled in the mysteries of sleep and darkness, is shown as an exotic land. Massive, slumbering, and semi-nude, Africa rests one arm on a sphinx, evoking ancient Egypt, and the other a lion, typically associated with the "dark continent." ...
Of all the figures, American assumes the most dynamic posture, with her torso turned and her left arm stretched out in a forceful diagonal.... In her right hand she holds a torch, symbolic of liberty and enlightenment, which an abundant sheaf, representing material prosperity, balanced across her lap. A robust figure of Labor turns the wheel of progress, a straightforward reference to America's growing industrial power at the beginning of the 20th century. As America looks to the future, an Indian crouching behind her right shoulder is a reminder of her past and by his position implies a tacit acceptance of the "march of progress."

Brooksburg Cemetery
Section 36 Township 4 North, Range 11 East
Milton Township, Jefferson County, Indiana by Robert W. Scott
This cemetery is located on the Manville-Brooksburg road, just north of the main section of Brooksburg. This cemetery belongs to the Brooksburg Methodist Church, which was founded in 1891. It was probably a Bondurant family cemetery originally because there were 15 marked graves of Bondurants, all preceding the church’s founding. There are no other burials for other families before the church’s founding. The DAR shows Josephine Keel as dying in 1871, but I have not found this stone and the date may be an error. The same applies to Anna Gale, also listed by the DAR as dying in 1871. Before 1891, many Brooksburg area residents were buried at the Joyce Cemetery, just over two miles up-stream on the Indian Kentuck, or in the cemetery of the Morris Chapel M.E. Church, just upstream near the Ohio River. This transcription includes all transcriptions done by the John Paul Chapter DAR. The most recent death date in the DAR record is 1931. I have combined the many military inscriptions, which often were on separate stones, with the tombstone of the respective soldier. Any corrections are welcome as I had rain which caused difficult in reading some notes later. Completed September 15, 2002
