Brimley Bayview Cemetery
I walked this cemetery in May of 2000, while on vacation in Brimley. Did not have tombstone rubbing equipment with me at the time. When I return in September - I will take with me if anyone is interested in any of the broken stones. There are also other areas that I could not get into with stones. Lots that were fenced and totally overgrown and I will need to take proper clothing to work on them.

Wednesday, April 02, 2003 Hamburg, Ashley County, Arkansas Home Local News Sports/Outdoors Opinions ... Guest Book Ashley County History Beech Creek Cemetery
Updated April 10, 2002 The Beech Creek Cemetery is east of Hamburg south of Arkansas Highway 8. To reach the cemetery, go 10.9 miles east from the intersection of Highway 8 and U. S. 425 in Hamburg. Then turn right on Ashley Road 317. Travel south 1.0 miles and then turn right on an unnamed road. The Beech Creek Baptist Church is located .5 miles from that intersection, and the cemetery is .2 miles past the church where the unnamed road dead ends. The cemetery is located at N 33 09.306 and W 91 39.170. The Daughters of the American Revolution survey of the cemetery in February, 1966, by Mr. and Mrs. William T. Files and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dean Miller showed approximately 120 tombstones in this cemetery. During the check in April, 2002, almost all of these markers were still present. The new survey includes a total of about 190 markers. In addition to the marked graves, depressions in the ground indicate many more unmarked graves. VIII. 1871 - 1935 St. Thomas's Hospital, Stangate In 1871, after much debate as to the new location, the hospital finally moved to its new site at Stangate in Lambeth, opposite the Houses of Parliament. Many other sites had been proposed, including several out in the country, and the site of the Bethlehem Hospital (now the Imperial War Museum). And so, the new hospital was built in Lambeth. It was projected to cost twice as much as the compensation received from the Charing Cross Railway Company, but this was not a worry at the time as the economy was considered very healthy. The new St.Thomas's Hospital was finally opened with a capacity of 588 beds on June 21st 1871, three years after the foundation stone had been laid. However, this was to be the eve of a great depression that didn't lift until the late 1890's. As a result of the consequent trouble with income (generous donors being a little harder to come by), not all of the wards could open. The hospital launched an appeal the week after it opened to address the shortfall, but this wasn't sufficiently successful, and the hospital was forced to admit paying middle-class patients. This was another case of private patients funding charitable work. It was clear, however, that the public held their hospitals in high esteem. The first 'Hospital Sunday' was held in London on June 15th 1873, and was quite successful in raising money for the hospitals. After an appeal was made in 1896, the governors finally had enough in the way of donations to open the remaining wards. Further support came from the Worshipful Company of Mercers who, in 1898 gave £10,000 for the cost of 10 accident beds. This situation at the new hospital was not wholly different to that in which some new units find themselves nowadays - i.e. the government will fund the building of new wards, but not increase the running expenses grant. This means that wards are built, but because there are not adequate operating funds, there is either no money to pay the required staff, or even a shortage of trained staff available. Thus the wards stay shut.
