British Boyhood: The Stracheys (The 1880s)
The Stracheys was a well conected Victorian family. the family produced politicans, statesmen, and historical and sociological writers. The Strachey family was photographed by the famed French photographer Nadar, presumably while Sir Richard and his family were in Paris (figure 1). Two older boys are Figure 1.This Strachey family photograph was taken about 1883 by the famous French photographer Nadar. Lytton is to the left of Lady Strchley -and wears a modest lace collar with a front buttoning Fauntleroy suit or dress. His hair is done similarly to his younger sister Marjorie who wears a larger lace collar and a velvet dress worn with pantalettes and strap shoes. wearing Eton suits. Lytton and his sister Marjorie look quite similarly dressed with long hair, bangs , and Fautleroy-looking outfits. Some of the best known family members, and details (where available) on their childhood and clothing, include:
    Sir Richard Strachey (1817-1908)
Sir Richard was the family patriarch. He was born in Somersetshire. I have no details on his childhood, but he was a noted soldier and colonial administrator. He served in India (1836-50), lived in England for 5 years, and then returned to India. He served in several posts in the colonial civil service associated with public works and the railways. He authored in 1879 a major work on public works, finances and railways of colonial India, jointly with his brotherSir John Strachey, another colonial administrator. Most of his children were born in India.

Strachey, Lytton (Giles Lytton Strachey), 1880-1932, English biographer and critic, educated at Cambridge. He was one of the leading members of the Bloomsbury group . Strachey is credited with having revolutionized the art of writing biography. In reaction to the copious dull scholarship and the lengthy panegyrics of the 19th cent., he determined to write biographies that were swift, selective, critical, witty, and artistic. His work includes Eminent Victorians (1918), a volume of short biographical studies; Queen Victoria (1921), his masterpiece; Elizabeth and Essex (1928); and Portraits in Miniature (1931). As a critic, Strachey was the author of such works as Landmarks in French Literature (1912), a study of the classical spirit, and Books and Characters See biography by Michael Holroyd (2 vol., 1968).

By Charles Poore "Virginia Woolf & Lytton Strachey Letters" selected and edited by Leonard Woolf and James Strachey Can anyone imagine Virginia Woolf married to Lytton Strachey? No doubt an imaginative author writing about the Bloomsbury illuminati could do just that - in a novel. But the two principals entertained the idea only fleetingly. The evidence is in some lines that Lytton Strachey (1880-1932) wrote his brother James about Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) when she was still Virginia Stephen, in March, 1909: "*** In my efforts to escape, I had a decided reverse the other day. I haven't mentioned the incident before for various reasons. On Feb. 19 I proposed to Virginia, and was accepted. It was an awkward moment, as you may imagine, especially as I realised, the very minute it was happening, that the whole thing was repulsive to me. Her sense was amazing, and luckily it turned out that she's not in love. The result was that I was able to manage a fairly honorable retreat. The story is really rather amusing and singular, but its effect has been to drive me onto those shoals more furiously ! than ever. I need hardly mention the immense secrecy of the affair ***."

    Guardian Friday June 25, 1999
An ambitious attempt was launched yesterday to rescue the word Bloomsbury from a century of derision. Members of the Bloomsbury Set are to be rehabilitated as serious artists, pioneering liberal thinkers and fanatically hard workers, rather than people who "lived in squares but loved in triangles". An exhibition at the Tate gallery, in London this winter will concentrate on the painters in the group - Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant - but will take in the life of novelist Virginia Woolf and the set's circle of friends and lovers, including essayist Lytton Strachey and economist John Maynard Keynes. Many other exhibitions, walks, lectures and events are planned, in London and at the set's rural outpost, Charleston farmhouse in East Sussex.
