Virginia Woolf
(1882-1941) kom från en högborgerlig
och intellektuell miljö i South Kensington i London. Föräldrarna dog tidigt
och Virginia, född Stephen, och hennes syskon drog i väg till ett mer bohemiskt liv
i Bloomsbury.

John Maynard Keynes Lytton Strachey
"By a continuous process of inflation, governments can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens. By this method, they not only confiscate, but they confiscate arbitrarily; and while the process impoverishes many, it actually enriches some....The process engages all of the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner that not one man in a million can diagnose." - John Maynard Keynes Economic Consequences of the Peace, 1920 S inging the Red Flag , the highborn sons of the British upper-class lay on the carpeted floor spinning out socialist schemes in homosexual intermission. Sometimes, one of the participants would shout out an obscenity - then, as if on signal, the entire group would join in a frenzied babble of profanity. Here and there individuals would smoke or chew hashish. Most had unkempt long hair, and some sported beards. The attitude in such gatherings was anti-establishmentarian. To them the older generation was horribly out of date; even superfluous. The capitalist system was declared obsolete, and revolution was proclaimed as the only solution. Christianity was pronounced an enemy force, and the worst sort of depravities were eulogized as “that love which passes all Christian understanding.”

BLOOMSBURY by Richard Kaye from Seeking to explain the phenomenal popularity in the 1970s of biographical studies of those artists and intellectuals associated with Bloomsbury, the literary critic Elizabeth Hardwick pinpointed its "gay liberation, its serious high CAMP." Whether one considers Bloomsbury as a self-infatuated coterie, a forward-thinking commune, a circle of "New Athenians," or a mean-spirited mob, Bloomsbury's open acceptance of erotic license and its hostility toward social convention lend it considerable interest in the history of homosexuality among the English upper classes. Undoubtedly the most flamboyant of the "Bloomsbuggers," as the homosexual members of Bloomsbury were called, was Giles Lytton Strachey (1880-1932), son of a distinguished soldier and Indian administrator. While a student at Trinity College, Cambridge, Strachey met Keynes and Leonard Woolf and later went on to head the Apostles, Cambridge's exclusive intellectual society to which also belonged several other figures associated with Bloomsbury, including Forster, Leonard Woolf, and Keynes. Strachey's classic Eminent Victorians (1918) was in some ways Bloomsbury's definitive text, a withering attack on the Victorian era's earnest promotion of self-improvement, chauvinism, and hypocrisy. Skewering Cardinal Manning as a Machiavellian careerist, Florence Nightingale as a manipulative neurotic, the educator Dr. Arnold as a middle-brow prig, and General Gordon as an imperialist crank, Strachey targeted a whole system of repressive values left over from the previous era.

He was one of the leading members of the Bloomsbury group . Strachey is credited with having revolutionized the art of writing biography. In reaction to the copious dull scholarship and the lengthy panegyrics of the 19th cent., he determined to write biographies that were swift, selective, critical, witty, and artistic. His work includes Eminent Victorians (1918), a volume of short biographical studies; Queen Victoria (1921), his masterpiece;

The history of the Victorian Age will never be written: we know too much about it. For ignorance is the first requisite of the historian - ignorance, which simplifies and clarifies, which selects and omits, with a placid perfection unattainable by the highest art.

Administrative/Biographical History
(Adeline) Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), novelist and critic, was born on 25 January 1882 in London, the second daughter of (Sir) Leslie Stephen. Too delicate for the rigours of regular school, she spent her childhood at her family's London house in Hyde Park Gate and country home at St. Ives in Cornwall. Her mother's death in 1895 precipitated the first of the nervous breakdowns which punctuated her life. Her father's death in 1904 was followed by another, but that was also the year of her first published work. After this Virginia, together with her sister Vanessa and her brother Adrian, settled in Gordon Square where they collected round them a group of brilliant young men whom their elder brother Thoby had got to know at Cambridge; notably Roger Fry, J. M. (later Lord) Keynes, Lytton Strachey, E. M. Forster, Leonard Woolf, and Clive Bell. Thus was inaugurated 'the Bloomsbury group'. In 1912 she married Leonard Sidney Woolf (1880-1969). In 1914 she had another serious breakdown, and although after a year she recovered, for the rest of her life her husband saw to it that she lived very quietly. They lived partly in London and partly in Sussex, where in 1919 they purchased at Monks House, at Rodmell, near Lewes, East Sussex. It was during this period that her chief work was done and her fame established. Of her novels
