Just behind the church there is an "old" section of about 250-300 graves that are essentially all old Irish starting about 1850. These have been transcribed here. The rest of the graveyard is rather new, dating from about 1950 with a mix of Irish, but mostly non-Irish. The old graveyard ended in the early 1900s for the most part. They must have used another graveyard from 1900-1950. Much thanks to Kevin Murphy for transcribing this cemetery. kmurph@mediaone.net

Going North on Highway 99 out of Darien, GA. This Cemetery is located on the right, just before The Meridian line. The inscriptions are not in alphabetical border. It is in the order of the way I walked it. Beginning with the first row, I worked my way down the right side of the Cemetery. Then, worked down the left side of the Cemetery (as designated by the access road for burials that goes through the Cemetery.) Many unmarked grave sites. And also grave sites with slabs that are unmarked also. Some Tomb Stones were hand made, and hand carved.

I am beginning to suspect all elaborate and special systems of eduction. They seem to me to be built upon the supposition that every child is a kind of idiot who must be taught to think.
    Anne Sullivan
    Teacher Anne Sullivan (1866-1936)
Anne Sullivan became a teacher, despite a childhood marked by extreme poverty, the death of her mother, and partial blindness caused by illness. When she was 10 years old, Anne's family sent her to live in a state-run poorhouse. Four years later, she was allowed to enter a school for the blind. At first Anne did very poorly at the school. She was defiant and hostile, but care and attention from her teachers, along with surgery that helped restore partial sight, transformed Anne into a star student, and she graduated as valedictorian. On March 3, 1887, Anne arrived in Tuscumbia, Alabama to become the tutor of a 6-year-old child who was deaf, blind, and mute from an illness she contracted when she was 19 months old. The child was Helen Keller , and the partnership that began that day endured for their lifetimes. Helen's breakthrough in understanding began when Anne taught her the word and concept for water. From that tiny, but significant beginning, and with Anne's help and patient teaching, Helen not only graduated from college, but also became a world-famous writer and social activist. The story of these two remarkable women was made into a movie called
