D19: Irish Famine Memorial
and Annie Sullivan
Corner of School and Washington Streets
The Irish Famine Memorial was dedicated in 1998 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Irish potato famine. It honors the arrival of Irish immigrants to Boston and their contributions to the city. Created by sculptor Robert Shure, the sculptures depict a starving family in Ireland begging for help, and one arriving in America. Among the Irish women honored by the Boston Women's Heritage Trail is Annie Sullivan Macy (1866-1936), known as the gifted teacher of Helen Keller. Born to poor Irish immigrants to Massachusetts, Sullivan progressively became blind. After the death of her mother and her father's abandonment, she entered an orphanage. In 1880, a supervisor placed her in the Perkins School for the Blind in South Boston. Two operations improved her eyesight enough so she could read, and Sullivan graduated as valedictorian of her class. She became the teacher of Helen Keller (1880-1968), who came from an advantaged family but could not hear, see, or speak. Sullivan devoted her life to Keller, who became a national celebrity, and saw Keller through her education and early career. "Children require guidance and sympathy far more than instruction" Annie Sullivan
D20: Old South Meeting House
and Phillis Wheatley
310 Washington Street When Old South, the site of mass protest meetings in Revolutionary Boston, was slated for demolition a hundred years later, a group of women bought the building (but not the land) to protect it. Philanthropist Mary Tileston Hemenway (1820-1894) then contributed more than half the sum needed to preserve it, becoming an early leader in historic preservation.

    97. Scholars In Humanities Council Chautauquas - The Complete Chautauquan
HOME The Complete Chautauquan Scholars in Humanities Council Chautauquas.By Jeffrey Scott Maxwell. Chautauqua Scholars Bring History to Life
    http://members.aol.com/AlphaChautauquan/scholars.html
HOME The Complete Chautauquan Scholars in Humanities Council Chautauquas By Jeffrey Scott Maxwell Chautauqua Scholars Bring History to Life When a humanities scholar takes it upon himself or herself to portray a figure or character from history, he or she will usually prepare one, two or even more years for the part. To portray a person from history requires voluminous amounts of research and preparation. Scholars who continue to portray numerous characters over time continue to read and re-read information about each of the characters. People who are not necessarily scholars can dress up in a costume and pretend to be someone else, often with great skill; they are known as actors. But the scholarship comes with becoming intimately familiar with the person they portray through indepth research, and that is frequently revealed in scholars' responses to audience questions. When a person is able to answer skillfully in character the questions of chautauqua audience members, then he or she can be considered a chautauqua scholar. Chautauqua Scholars on the Web Below is a list of people who I have found mostly from the Internet, but also from personal contacts. The appearance of an individual on this page is not necessarily an endorsement, because I have only seen for myself about fifty or so characters performed in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas by various scholars who have appeared here from all over the country. I have had the good fortune to see some great scholars and also some below average ones and every level in between. I usually keep my opinions about who the below average ones are, but ask me about the great ones, and I will rattle off a quick dozen for you sometime, and I also have some favorites who are not necessarily on the "great scholar" list, but would definitely appear on the "great people" list.
