Although it has achieved lasting fame as fiction, fable and children's book, Gulliver's Travels was a direct and bitter satire of the English court, political parties, religious dissensions, philosophies, men of science, historians and projectors of Swift's day. Swift, who was born in Dublin, served in England as secretary to Sir William Temple from 1689 to 1699 and returned to Ireland in 1714. He was involved in many political controversies, especially those relating to the treatment of the Irish by the English, and his satirical pamphlets were widely circulated, read, and influential. Swift became insane in his last years, but until his death he was known as Dublin's foremost citizen. Among Swift's best known works is Gulliver's Travels (1726), where the stories of Gulliver's experiences among dwarfs and giants are best known. Swift gave to these journeys an air of authenticity and realism and many contemporary readers believed them to be true. Jonathan Swift: Time Period: end of Renaissance Genre: Enlightenment/Renaissance, satire Biographical Information: Born to English parents in Dublin, Ireland. Father died when Swift was very young; mother left Swift with Uncle Godwin and returned to England. Swift was intelligent but headstrong. Became a civil servant and later was ordained in the Church of England. Had a life long kinda-sorta love affair with Esther Johnson, but there is no record of marriage. Was a staunch Tory. Wrote many satiric texts, including The Battle of the Books (1697) and Tale of a Tub Is best known for Gulliver's Travels (1726) and A Modest Proposal Went deaf starting at age 20, and seems to have suffered from Alzheimer's later in life. Most people considered him mad toward the end of his life, but he kept a bit of his wit; in his last will and testament he left money and orders to create a home for imbeciles and lunatics in Dublin since such a place was so badly needed there. Anecdote: Swift usually wrote under pseudonyms, among them A Person of Quality, A Person of Honor, A Dissenter, The Reverend Dr. Jonathan Swift, Dean Of Patrick's In Ireland (aka TRDJSDOPII), and M.B. Drapier. A famous story connected to his pseudonym Isaak Bickerstaff: A writer named John Partridge maintained an almanac.

This account of Swift’s life is probably far more accurate than other sources regarding his history. This biography is able to capture Swift’s feelings towards specific events, as well as the feelings concerning Swift of those who knew him best. It includes direct quotations from other writers and philosophers of that era and also contains letters written by Swift that give a unique view into his life. Excerpts from his own writing are also included and related to his views on religion and politics. Rossi, Mario M. and Hone, Joseph M. Swift or the Egotist. London: Camelot Press, 1977. A negative impression of Jonathan Swift is given in this biography and it is clear that the authors are biased. They do their best to point out all of the contradictions he made in his life, in addition to his odd views of family, religion, the economy and Irish-English relations. The biography is filled with statistical and factual information (dates, family lineage, facts about his upbringing) rather than excerpts of writing or letters to his peers. Although this information does enhance understanding of Swift’s life, it allows much of the biography to be strongly influenced by the opinions of the authors. Much of the evidence given supports their idea that Swift was a bizarre and confused individual.

Bekannt wurde er vor allem durch sein Hauptwerk "Gulliver's Travels" "Gullivers Reisen" 1. Einleitung Swift wurde am 30. November 1667 als Spross einer aus England stammenden Familie in Dublin geboren, wo er zunächst am Trinity College Theologie studierte. Da sein Vater bereits vor seiner Geburt gestorben war, war Swift in seiner Jugend auf Zuwendungen von Gönnern angewiesen. 1689 fand er im englischen Farnham eine Anstellung als Sekretär des Politikers und Schriftstellers Sir William Temple (1628-1699), einem entfernten Verwandten seiner Mutter. Swifts Verhältnis zu seinem Arbeitgeber gestaltete sich allerdings äußerst schwierig; 1694 übersiedelte er wieder nach Irland und empfing die Priesterweihen der anglikanischen Kirche .
