Swift, Jonathan Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was an Irish-born author who gained notoriety and political influence as a sharp-witted satirist. His most famous work, Gulliver's Travels , followed the journeys of a character named Lemuel Gulliver through the imaginary lands of the Lilliputians (pygmies), the Brobdingnags (giants), and the Houyhnhnms (an ultra-rational society of horses) who ruled over the cretin Yahoos (an uncivilized, humanlike race). Other satires included A Modest Proposal (which ironically suggested that the British eat their own children) and The Battle of the Books (which poked fun at literary critics). Many Swiftian words have become integrated into the English language. When something is "of Lilliputian proportions" it is very, very small; referring to someone as a "Yahoo" implies that they lack manners and behave badly. Jonathan Swift, 1667-1745 Famous Irish poet, pamphleteer, satirist and wit of Augustan Age. He was educated (more or less) at Trinity College, Dublin. In the aftermath of the 1689 Jacobite rebellion in Ireland, Swift found shelter in England, under the auspices of Sir William Temple, a prominent diplomat and statesman. Swift served as secretary to Temple for the next ten years. In the process, he earned his M.A. at Oxford, was ordained into the Episcopalian Church of Ireland and was charged with the tutorship of Temple's young ward, Esther Johnson, a.k.a. "Stella". After Temple died in 1699, Swift moved back to Ireland, working at various posts in the Church. In 1704, two satirical pieces Tale of the Tub and Battle of the Books earned him some renown (and some enemies). Returning to England intermittently, he became intimate with the Augustan wits and literary men of the day Addison, Steele, Pope and Congreve. Although a lifelong supporter of the Whigs, the growing chasm between Whigs and the Church led Swift, in 1708, to launch a series of pamphlet attacks on the Whigs. By 1710, Swift had switched over the Tories completely and put his skills at their disposal. Swift took over The Examiner , a Tory rag, and, with a couple of 1711 pamphlets, helped turn to the tide of English public opinion against the "Whig" War of Spanish Succession.

King of Brobdingnag, Gulliver's Travels Jonathan Swift (1667-1745), writer, satirist, political pamphleteer, author of Gulliver's Travels Swift was born in Dublin (30 November 1667), educated at Kilkenny School and Trinity College, Dublin. Swift served his political apprenticeship under the Whig statesman, Sir William Temple. Swift was secretary to Sir William at Moor Park, Farnham 1689-1694, 1696-1699. The intervening years Swift spent in Ireland, where he was ordained and received the small prebend of Kilroot. On the death of Sir William, Swift returned to Ireland, where he was given the prebend of St Patrick's, Dublin. It was at Moor Park that Swift met his beloved Stella to whom he dedicated his journal. Swift's political career spanned forty years and three monarchs - Queen Anne, George I and George II. At the height of his political career, Swift was able to order Ministers around, his pen was the mightiest sword in the land and justly feared.

Jonathan Swift Researcher: Rachel Sahlman Artist: Dick Strandberg Irish author and satirist Jonathan Swift was born November 30, 1667 in Dublin. His father died before Swift's birth, leaving his wife with a baby daughter and unborn son. As a result, Swift was raised by his three uncles. It is believed that Swift felt a sense of insecurity during his childhood because he had no father and his home life was unstable Swift's uncles took care of Swift's education. At age 6, he was sent to Kilkenny School, considered the best school in Ireland at that time. At 15, Swift entered Trinity College in Dublin. He was not a particularly good student and tended to neglect his studies. Although he received his degree in 1686, it was speciali gratia, meaning "by special favor." Swift continued his studies at Trinity as a candidate for an advanced degree. However, in 1689 he was forced to move to England because of political unrest. In England, he worked as a secretary to Sir William Temple at Moor Park, Surrey. Temple was a diplomat and writer, who was preparing his memoirs. Although their relationship was often strained, Swift worked for Temple for the next 10 years. During his employment at Moor Park, Swift was given unlimited access to Temple's vast library, which helped him to grow intellectually. He also met and tutored Esther Johnson, the daughter of Temple's widowed housekeeper. In later writings, Swift referred to Johnson as Stella. His relationship with Stella continues to be one of controversy and speculation. Some say Swift and Stella were secretly married.

Jonathan Swift, 1667 - 1745 Jonathan Swift, an Anglo-Irish satiritst, essayist, poet, historian, and autobiographer was born in 1667. Swift's father died prior to his birth, leaving him, his mother, and three sisters dependent upon the charity of his father's family. He was well-provided for by his father's family and well-educated in the best schools in Ireland. In 1689, civil unrest in Ireland caused Swift to flee to England, where he secured a position as a secretary to Sir William Temple. While employed by Temple, Swift read widely and was introduced to many prominent individuals. Though Swift once proposed marriage to Jane Waring, in truth he placed a higher value on friendship than love or marriage. This was demonstrated by the relationship with his closest personal friend, Esther Johnson. At one time it was believed that Swift was insane during the last years of his life. However, this notion has been discredited as it is now known that he suffered from Ménière's Syndrome. In 1742, he was declared incapable of caring for himself and placed in the custody of guardians. When he died in 1745, he was buried in St. Patrick's Cathedral next to Esther Johnson. Important Personal Dates: 1689 Swift flees to England from Ireland and attains a position as secretary to Sir William Temple.
