Poems of the Week:
The Dawn of the 20th Century
by John Stringer It’s time to talk about poets again. During the last year we have looked at some individual poets, but in essence we looked at the progress of 19th century British (actually, largely English) poetry, from the Lake Poets, to the Cockneys, and the Pre-Raphaelites . We also looked at the dominant figure of Tennyson , who bestrode the latter half of the century. We also quoted – more than once – from the War Poets . However, it is worth looking at what happened between, say, 1880 and 1914. Tennyson died in 1892, although for several years after Enoch Arden, published in 1864, he was more concerned with drama until the last six years of his life. The figure most often identified as the leader of the mid-Victorian poetic revolt was Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837 – 1909). We have quoted more than once from the poems in his Poems and Ballads , the first series of which was published in 1866, notably The Garden of Proserpine . Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of Literature remarks that this collection “Clearly display Swinburne’s preoccupation with masochism, flagellation, and paganism.” Somewhat different from one’s perception of the age of Victoria – although items in The Mediadrome’s History section have frequently revealed that our ‘perception’ is somewhat different from reality! Actually, Swinburne’s major works preceded our time period. However, he introduced the English poetry reader to Charles-Pierre Baudelaire (1821 – 1867), notably through his elegy
