A 9 page paper examining the presence of proto-fascism and its antithesis, humanism, in Joyce's first novel. The paper asserts that while it is not technically correct to search for examples of fascism in the book since the term did not exist at the time the novel was written, examples of this type of mentality can be fruitfully analyzed in contrast to the book's celebration of humanism. Bibliography lists ten sources.

Filename: Storyh.wps Kate Chopin's Awakening / The Role of Women in Society in the Late 19th Century New Orleans send me this paper Kate Chopin's story 'The Awakening' focuses on the life of Edna Pontellier, a wife, mother and a woman vastly conflicted about her notion of self and her role in the world. This perspective is used to represent Chopin's perspectives on the role of women in society, and a concentration on the notion of female subjugation as a major component of this role. This 6 page paper provides support for this as a central theme in Chopin's work, and also reflects upon sections of the text as they defines the relationships and characters in the work.

    INFLUENCES
Reading Because of his devotion to his art it is probably true to say of Yeats that from his childhood on he chose to read only those who moved him to an emotional or poetical response. He sought the response in his literary and philosophical studies which were extensive - Theosophy and occult works; Plato and the Neoplantonists; St. Thomas Aquinas; the Kabbalah; Irish Myths and Legends; Dante, Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Donne, Castiglione, Vico, Swift, Berkeley, Burke, Blake, Shelly, Kant, Nietzche, Ferguson, Mangan, Standish O'Grady. John Butler Yeats, 1839-1922 Jack Butler Yeats, 1887-1957 Six years younger than the poet, he also spent his childhood in Sligo. Sligo, with its ships, fairs, races and circuses and the variety of men and women associated with them, was an inspiration for Jack's drawing from 1887 until he started his career as an art student in London. "In half of the pictures he paints today I recognise faces that I have met at Rosses or the Sligo quays', wrote the poet. The wild faces of horsemen, the quiet dignity of tinkers and wanderers, set against tumultuous skies which flash and dance with colour, are transformed in Jack's imagination; and that, after all, is what W.B. achieved in poetry often having that very subject matter.

    Previous Next
    Inishmaan
The middle of the three Aran Islands , Inishmaan is one of the westernmost points in Europe and one of the most enchanting. With high stone walls that define a complex maze of boreens and roads, the island is the most fertile of the three, but the least visited. It is a completely unspoiled island with a special island tradition in its small Irish-speaking community of 350 people. There are no cars on the island, except for a few land-rovers used to ferry goods and people from the airstrip and harbour.
    John Millington Synge
No one has meant more to Inishmaan than the Irish dramatist John Millington Synge (1871-1909), who is best known for his play The Playboy of the Western World . One of his other plays, Riders to the Sea , is set on Inishmaan. His book The Aran Islands is the classic account of life here. Reading it before you come here will make you appreciate the ambience even more.
    Synge's Cottage
The thatched cottage were J.M. Synge spent his summers in the years 1898-1902 is now a small museum. It is run by an enthusiastic, nice, helpful, informative woman, who is related to the couple that took care of Synge during his time here.
A few minutes after 10 pm the lady arrived and opened the door. I was the only visitor. She showed me around and we discussed Synge and Inishmaan for about 105 minutes, until I had to leave in order to catch the ferry back to Doolin. Otherwise I would have stayed even longer! It is fabulous to see what you have been reading so much about: the kitchen where old Pat Dirane used to tell stories, the doors on opposite sides which were opened one at the time to let the sunshine in, the fireplace, Synge's bedroom, the small cradle... It is even better when you have a personal guide who is so passionate about it.

    Mount Jerome - Gothic Cemetery
What Highgate Cemetery is to London and Pere La Chase Cemetery is to Paris - Mount Jerome cemetery is to Dublin. Located at Harold's Cross on Dublin's Southside, Mount Jerome is a veritable Metropolis of the Illustrious Dead, a Gothic marvel of Funerary landscape in sculptured stone. The Rev Stephen Jerome from whom the cemetery is named, was, in 1639, Vicar of St Kevin's parish in the Harold's Cross area. The cemetery itself came into use in 1836, and now covers aprx 47 acres. A thoughtful stroll along it's myriad silent pathways, aided by a copy of the guide which is obtainable at the office, takes one on a tour of the last resting places of Patriots and Policemen, Playwrights and Huguenots, Architects and Painters and of two survivors of the Charge Of The Light Brigade who inevitably fell, finally, into the Jaws Of Death. This is a place where protective stone angels smile softly over the grave of John Millington Synge (1871-1909) Ireland's great playwright - who expressed the inner psyche of his people in dramas, (performed at Dublin's Abbey Theatre), such as - 'Riders To The Sea', 'Deirdre' and in so doing expressed universal truths, not least in 'The Playboy Of The Western World'. Here, also lie, in anticipation of that great blast on the Final day, the mortal remains of this selection of luminous names from the list of the Great Departed:

Achill Knitwear sells a range of premium quality traditional Aran sweaters and cardigan sweaters. Handknitted in 100% Irish wool, these garments are the classic Irish knitwear sweaters from the west of Ireland. Our best-selling traditional Aran sweaters (pictured, top left) are available in a range of colours as well as the original natural creamy otrwhite yarn shown here, while our Aran sweaters with flecked yarn (pictured, centre left) offer a fashionable twist to this classic garment. We also supply Aran cardigan sweaters (pictured, bottom left), with button fronts, pockets, and either V-neck or crew-neck finish.
A short history of the Aran sweater
According to most accounts, Aran sweaters - the home-made, utilitarian, hardwearing 'fishermans' sweaters made from undyed wool and featuring highly decorative stitch patterns - are actually a 20th century invention. There is little evidence that the garment was worn earlier than this along Ireland's Atlantic seaboard. The Anglo-Irish playwright John Millington Synge (1871-1909) famously went to live among 'the people' on the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland for short periods between 1898 and 1902. Synge's observations of life on the Aran Islands were recorded in his book 'The Aran Islands', published in 1907. In it, Synge comments on the local costume:
