W. B. Yeats and the Celtic Revival
Professor Gregory Castle Spring Semester 2001 Tuesdays 1:40-4:30 pm This course will consider Yeats, wearing all of his various masks: poet, playwright, folklorist, storyteller, essayist, book-reviewer, journalistic gadfly, theater manager, mystic, Free State Senator, Anglo-Irish gentleman. The chief cultural context will be the Celtic Revival (aka, the Irish Literary Revival) during the period 1890-1914. In addition to reading Yeats’s works, we will read works by associates of his in the Abbey Theater company (principally John M. Synge and Lady Augusta Gregory) and by other, sometimes competing, Revivalist writers (Douglas Hyde, George Russell, John Eglinton, Stephen Gwynne and George Moore). We will also read excerpts from the works of nineteenth century historians, Celticists and cultural nationalists (like Standish O’Grady, Matthew Arnold, George Sigerson and Charles Gavan Duffy) who influenced Yeats’s Revivalist thinking. Finally, we will read some of the leading figures in Irish studies today on Yeats and the Revival.

were cut and nailed level onto the frame, the directors of the Irish national theatre petitioned men and women across the country's literati to furnish their stage with cultural material. It was J.M. Synge's task to write an historical play. Mindful of the contexts and consequences of his work, Synge fled to the familiar asylum of the countryside to contemplate his charge. He returned with this sketch of a play: Two women, one Catholic, the other Protestant, escape from the black fans of warrape and unbridled debauchery as the basic means of troops on both sidesinto a cave, where, by boredom and nervous silence, they are forced to talk. Eventually they come to discuss the differences of their respective theologies, then each turn to the rectitude of their religion, until the Catholic woman retreats from the physical safety of the cave to chance bloody submission rather than endure the perceived blasphemy of the other woman. The directors refused the sketch, perhaps denouncing it as divisive and controversial. Synge, confused and dejected, "turned to country life and speech" as the root of his work (Strong, 24-25). What prompted Synge to deliver this first scenario as a basis for an historical play? A brief look at some events of the young life of the man might possibly unveil the origins of his ideas.
His father died of smallpox in 1872, a year after Synge's birth, leaving his mother, Kathleen, to raise the family of five by both the profits of her family's lands and their convictions. Her father, Robert Traille, was an intensely Protestant rector in County Cork. He expressed his mission in extremely antagonizing and martial terms, declaring "I have waged war against popery in its thousand forms of wickedness, until my life had nearly paid the forfeit" (as quoted in Green, 3-4). Kathleen was no less fervent in her induced beliefs, nor less anxious about the "wickedness" of her Catholic foes.

With the addition of thirteen previously uncollected pieces, this new volume of Bernard Shaw's political journalism presents the most complete book in existence of Shaw's writing on Ireland and its political troubles.
Throughout his long life, Shaw's native land occupied his attention. As he explains, he spent only 20 of his more than 90 years in Ireland, but those 20 came first and left an indelible mark upon him. Representing a 60-year period beginning in 1886, these selections include essays, newspaper and magazine articles, letters to the editor, interviews, and passages from books.
First collected and compiled in 1962 by these two eminent scholars of Irish literature, the pieces were hailed for their prophetic intelligence and the book was described by the Cork Examiner as "the reference for future 'examiners' of Ireland's problems." The Washington Post called it a "searching history," presented with "the incisiveness of a contemporary and the timelessness of a prophet." Today, Shaw's opinions and predictions not only illuminate the past but also explain many of the intractable problems of the present.

Land and People PHYSICAL FEATURES CLIMATE FLORA AND FAUNA POPULATION
Physical features The island of Ireland consists of a large central lowland of limestone with a relief of hills and several coastal mountains. The mountain ridges of the south comprise old red sandstone separated by limestone river valleys. Elsewhere granite predominates, except in the north east which is covered by a basalt plateau. The central plain contains glacial deposits of clay and sand. It is interrupted by low hills and has large areas of bog and numerous lakes. At least two general glaciations have affected the island and everywhere ice-smoothed rock, mountain lakes, glacial valleys and deposits of glacial sand, gravel and clay mark the passage of the ice. A spectacular example of the impact of glaciation on the landscape is found in the Burren in County Clare. Longitude 51Ú2 and 101Ú2 west Latitude 511Ú2 and 551Ú2 north Total area 84,421 km2

76. J.M.Synge : The Vagrants Of Wicklow
The above verses, written by JM.Synge to describe one of his own walkabouts The authorof this essay, John Millington Synge (1871 – 1909), was born in Dublin
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/1719/vagrants.html
J.M.Synge : The Vagrants of Wicklow
Prelude
Still south I went and west and south again,
Through Wicklow from the morning till the night,
And far from cities, and the sights of men,
Lived with the sunshine, and the moon’s delight. I knew the stars, the flowers, and the birds,
The grey and wintry sides of many glens,
And did but half remember human words,
In converse with the mountains, moors, and fens. The above verses, written by J.M.Synge to describe one of his own walkabouts in County Wicklow, do not form part of the following article from the same famous pen – they have been added by the editor of this website. < Some features of County Wicklow, such as the position of the principal workhouses and holiday places, on either side of the coach road from Arklow to Bray, have made this district a favourite with the vagrants of Ireland. A few of these people have been on the roads for generations, but fairly often they seem to have merely drifted out from the ordinary people of the villages, and do not differ greatly from the class they come from. Their abundance has often been regretted; yet in one sense it is an interesting sign, for wherever the labourer of a country has preserved his vitality, and begets an occasional temperament of distinction, a certain number of vagrants are to be looked for. In the middle classes the gifted son of a family is always the poorest – usually a writer or artist with no sense for speculation – and in a family of peasants, where the average comfort is just over penury, the gifted son sinks also, and is soon a tramp on the roadside.
