John Synge 's father Edward Synge could trace his family back to the fifteenth century. The origin of the name "Synge" is described in the introduction to General relativity : papers in honour of J L Synge The name Synge is said to have originated with Henry VIII, who commanded a favourite choirboy to "Synge, Millington, synge". John Synge's mother, Ellen Price, was of Scottish origin, being descended from the Scottish Stuarts, in particular a Sir William Stuart who went to Ireland in the early seventeenth century. After being educated at St Andrews College in Dublin, Synge entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1915. There his achievements were quite remarkable, winning a Foundation Scholarship at the end of his first year. This scholarship was normally won by students in their third year of study. He was awarded his M.A. in 1919 in Mathematics and Experimental Physics. He received the Large Gold Medal for his outstanding work. After graduating, Synge was appointed to a lectureship in mathematics at Trinity College, but he only held the post for a short time, leaving for Canada in 1920. from 1920 to 1925 Synge was an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto. Then in 1925 he returned to Trinity College, Dublin where he was elected to a fellowship and also appointed to the chair of Natural Philosophy (the older name for Physics).

The playwright John Millington Synge (JM Synge) was hugely influential in constructing one view of life and culture in the west of Ireland at the turn of the 20th century. JM Synge's infamous work 'The Playboy of the Western World' owes more than a passing debt to Achill Island and its history.

Poems Artists Writers ... Graham Greene
John Millington Synge (1871-1909), the writer and playwright, epitomises the trend among artists and writers at the turn of the 20th century to look to the west of Ireland for inspiration and for an 'authentically' Irish subject matter. It was a trend that also saw the artist Paul Henry and his painter wife Grace travel to Achill Island in 1909 and, some decades later, was part of the attraction of his Mayo homeland for writer Ernie O'Malley . Both Paul Henry and Ernie O'Malley were readers of JM Synge, as was the English novelist Graham Greene before he travelled to Achill in 1947.

John Millington Synge(1871-1909) The Playboy of the Western World Synge - a leading figure in Irish Literary Renassance - reflects gullibility, superstition and brutality - blends Celtic romanticism with modern realism - two elements in his plays: Irish peasantry and Irish speech I Background
  • Audience claimed that the play was a degrading representation of Irish sensibilities (Bowen 71). Literary historians have explained the townsfolk¡¦s sympathy with the deed as being the empathy of an oppressed people with anyone who rebelled against authority. The audience of the play saw it as a representation of reality rather than a work of art.
  • II. Characteristics of the play
  • The play is not merely a story of young innocence and love but of the mentality and actions of an entire community. The play is said to be a play about audience response (Smith xx). By presenting the three father figures in the play, Synge presents a comic but degrading form of Irish institution that shapes the life of most Irishmen. Old Mahon is an individual with scant regard for the citizens (Bowen 72).
