3 Orwell Park, Dublin 6, Dublin. John Millington Synge Irish history. JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE (1871 - 1909)
John Millington Synge was born on 16th April 1871 at Newton Little, Rathfarnham, Dublin. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin, and later studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where he became proficient on the piano, flute and violin. Having decided to become a musician he moved to Germany in 1893.
Turning to writing, a couple of years later, he went to live in Paris where he met W.B Yeats. During this time he occasionally returned to Ireland especially visiting the Aran Islands.
It was Yeats who influenced Synge to return to the Islands and write about the way of life there. Synge spent the summers of 1889 - 1902 on the Islands, where he spent most of his time listening to talk and stories.

JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE
(Rathfanham 16 April 1871 - Dublin 24 March 1909) LIFE: Coming from a bourgeois family he first studies at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and at Trinity College where he degrees, then to Paris where he comes in contact with the symbolist atmosphere. He travels to France, Germany and Italy observing and meditating and coming then back to Paris where in 1897 he meets the poet William Butler Yeats . Synge shows to the poet some of his works about the French literature but Yeats finds them insufficient; but having immediately understood the great abilities and possibility of this young talent he exhorts him to leave Paris to go to live for some time in the Aran islands, off the Galway bay, in order to learn habits, traditions and language of the Gaelic people.
Synge in contact with that nature of incisive beauty, near those plain and primitive folk, definitively forms his temperament of man and writer. He writes The Aran Islands, 1907 , kind of diary of his stay on the islands, and the dramas The Shadow of the Glen, 1903

JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE
The Shadow of the Glen, 1903

The Playboy of the Western World
Even before the lights dim, the audience is transported back to turn-of-the-last-century Ireland. The gorgeous set makes you feel as if you've walked into a dusty pub in the middle of nowhere as melancholy dirges play. There's even a glossary of terms within the program to help you decipher some of the more challenging colloquialisms that will be heard throughout the evening. But the glossary isn't much help once the action starts. The words in J.M Synge's script come so rapidly it takes the ear a few moments to adjust to the thick Irish accents of the colorful locals. Then a young stranger, Christy (Brad Price), stumbles into the pub, recounting a powerful story of how he murdered his own father. Instead of reacting with the expected horror, the townsfolk regard him as a hero and turn Christy into Mayo's most eligible bachelor. Things come undone when his not-so-dead father comes seeking revenge. Synge's script may be a classic, but it is nonetheless flawed. We're never made to understand why Christy's tale is of such fascination to these people, and some great comedic opportunities are missed. A romance between Christy and the fiery bar owner Pegeen (Sara Hennessy) isn't fully fleshed, and his devotion to her when she turns on him doesn't quite ring true. It would seem more satisfying if Christy were a braggart trapped by his own lies, but the audience only feels sorry for the poor lad who is caught by accidental untruths. Also unclear is why the town bad girl (Laura Russell) goes out of her way to help Christy win the affections of her enemy Pegeen.

Othmar Schoek 1886 - 1957 The operas of Othmar Schoeck have never been popular outside Switzerland, in part because his compositions set German texts written in a style not conduscive to performance translation, and in part because his works are considered old fashioned. His second last opera, Massimilla Doni Das Schloss Durande premiered at the Berlin Staatsoper. After the the premiere of Durande Hermann Goering slammed the opera, sealing its fate in Germany. Schoeck wrote no futher operas.
Ernest Ansermet
Ernest Ansermet and Frank Martin were Swiss contemporaries and friends. Ansermet was chiefly a conductor. He conducted the premiere of Benjamin Britten's Rape of Lucretia at Glynbourne in 1946 and also premiered Martin's Der Sturm at the Vienna Staatsoper in 1956.
Martin's Der Sturm is a setting of a German translation of Shakespeare's The Tempest . In the original production the part of Arial was sung off-stage and mimed by a dancer, but in later versions this became a speaking role.
Frank Martin
Ralph Vaughan Williams 1872 - 1958 The operas of Ralph Vaughan Williams did much to revive a moribund English opera tradition. He wrote six operas and was working on a seventh when he died. Of these operas only two have made it into the repertory.
