Where the Mind is Without Fear
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection:
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is lead forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake. Rabindranath Tagore, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.
Poems and Songs from Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali "I drive down into the depth of the ocean"
"Ever in my life have I sought thee"

"The time that my journey takes is long"
"The song that I came to sing remains unsung" ... "On many an idle day have I grieved over lost time." A while back, when my mom came back from a visit to Bangladesh, she brought me back a present from my uncle (my Chhotto Mama), who is a Bangla Professor at Dhaka University . It was a book called "Selected Songs of Rabindranath Tagore" . It was filled with english translations of songs that I had grown up with. I was delighted to finally know the meanings of all those songs. For those of you who don't speak Bengali, or those of you who have never heard the original songs in Bengali, I must warn you, a lot of the real meaning is lost in translation. As with all great writers, these songs are best if read in the original language. The songs are translated by Abu Rushd and published by Rabinda Charcha Kendra of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Here are a few of my favorites.

Tagore was awarded the knighthood in 1915, but he surrendered it in 1919 as a protest against the Massacre of Amritsar, where British troops killed some 400 Indian demonstrators protesting colonial laws. Tagore's reputation in the West as a mystic has perhaps mislead his Western readers to ignore his role as a reformer and critic of colonialism. "When one knows thee, then alien there is none, then no door is shut. Oh, grant me my prayer that I may never lose touch of the one in the play of the many." (from Gitanjali Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta in a wealthy and prominent Brahman family. His father was Maharishi Debendranath Tagore, a religious reformer and scholar. His mother Sarada Devi, died when he was very young - her body carried through a gate to a place where it was burned and it was the moment when he realized that she will never come back. Tagore's grandfather had established a huge financial empire for himself, and financed public projects, such as Calcutta Medical College. The Tagores were pioneers of Bengal Renaissance and tried to combine traditional Indian culture with and Western ideas. However, in My Reminiscenes Tagore mentions that it was not until the age of ten when he started to use socks and shoes. Servants beat the children regularly. All the children contributed significantly to Bengali literature and culture. Tagore, the youngest, started to compose poems at the age of eight. He received his early education first from tutors and then at a variety of schools. Among them were Bengal Academy where he studied Bengali history and culture, and University College, London, where he studied law but left after a year without completing his studies. Tagore did not like the weather. Once he gave a beggar a cold coin - it was more than the beggar had expected and he returned it. In England Tagore started to compose the poem 'Bhagna Hridaj' (a broken heart).

He composed several hundred popular songs and in 1929 also began painting. Tagore wrote primarily in Bengali, but translated many of his works into English himself. He was awarded the 1913 Nobel Prize in literature, and in 1915 he was knighted by the British king George V. Tagore renounced his knighthood in 1919 following the Amritsar massacre of 400 Indian demonstrators by British troops. RABINDRANATH TAGORE
Tagore was born in Calcutta, India in 1861. Since his early years, he was exposed to writing, culture and art. He continued writing through his entire life producing more than 3,000 songs as well as novels, short stories, plays and poems. He wrote what are now the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh. On the way over to England he began translating, for the first time, his latest selections of poems, Gitanjali, into English. Almost all of his work prior to that time had been written in his native tongue, Bengali. He made the handwritten translations in a little notebook he carried around with him and worked on during the long sea voyage from India. Rothenstein, Tagore's friend learned of the translation, and asked to see the notebook. The painter could not believe his eyes. He called his friend, W.B. Yeats, and finally talked Yeats into looking at the hand scrawled notebook. Yeats was enthralled. He later wrote the introduction to Gitanjali when it was published in September 1912 in a limited edition by the India Society in London. In 1913 Rabindranath received the Nobel Prize for literature. He was subsequently knighted in 1915 but in 1919 after the Amritsar massacre of 400 Indian demonstrators by British troops, he gave up his knighthood. Although he did not agree with all the political activities and nationalistic principles of the movements for independence, he however participated in them along with Gandhi. He was opposed to nationalism and militarism as a matter of principle, and instead promoted spiritual values and the creation of a new world culture founded in multi-culturalism, diversity and tolerance. He served as a spiritual and creative beacon to his countrymen, and indeed, the whole world.

Early years of Rabindranath Tagore
Born in Calcutta on May 7, 1861, Rabindranath was the youngest of fourteen children. His father, Debendranath Tagore, was a Sanskrit scholar and a leading member of the Brahmo Samaj. Rabindranath's early education was imparted at home. In school, while others use to learn their lessons, he would slip into more exciting world of dreams. Inspired by his older nephew, he wrote his first poem when he was hardly seven. At the age of seventeen, his first book of poems was published. In 1878, he went to England for further studies but returned back in just seventeen months as he did not find the studies interesting. Rabindranath now started devoting most of his time to writing poems, plays, short stories and novels. In 1883, he got married to Mrinalini Devi. He taught his wife Bengali and Sanskrit.
Period of 1891-1900
This period saw Tagore publish a series of works, many based on the traditional village society of contemporary Bengal. In 1891, Rabindranath went to Shileida and Sayadpur to manage his father's estates. Living among the rural poor, he became acutely sensitive to their hardships. Many of the Tagore's themes centre around village life, introduction of 'western' elements, and their natural surroundings. His 1912 collection

Some Poems
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, which was a new religious sect in nineteenth-century Bengal and which attempted a revival of the ultimate monistic basis of Hinduism as laid down in the Upanishads . He was educated at home; and although at seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling, he did not finish his studies there. In his mature years, in addition to his many-sided literary activities, he managed the family estates, a project which brought him into close touch with common humanity and increased his interest in social reforms. He also started an experimental school at Shantiniketan where he tried his Upanishadic ideals of education. From time to time he participated in the Indian nationalist movement, though in his own non-sentimental and visionary way; and Gandhi, the political father of modern India, was his devoted friend. Tagore was knighted by the ruling British Government in 1915, but within a few years he resigned the honour as a protest against British policies in India. Tagore had early success as a writer in his native Bengal. With his translations of some of his poems he became rapidly known in the West. About Myself "Eton of the East" My stay at Mayo was the best part of my student life. The routine was hectic yet refreshing. The motto of the school was 'Let there be light' and we tried hard to achieve 'education is the manifestation of perfection already in man'. Keeping in mind 'stop not till the goal is reached' I graduated from this high school in 1997 (10+2). After completing my schooling I came to Delhi at University of Delhi and joined the undergraduate program.My major was Geography and I completed undergraduation in July 2000.I have also completed a computing course and a website designing and management course of 6 months duration each from Indira Gandhi National Open University(IGNOU), New Delhi. IGNOU is a pioneer in distance education and its objective is to teach its students the art of learning on your own and getting the very best of it.Its education system is flexible and for that reason makes it one of the most reputed Universities of India in such a short span(Estd-1985). Regarding my interests, hobbies etc. it's tough time. I like SCUBA diving as well as trekking/hiking. Astonishingly two diametrically opposite things, at one point of time I like to explore the abyss sometimes I try to reach the azure skies over the mountains. I'm also fond of cross country . Anything related to adventure fascinates me. Traveling is always a great pleasure for me.
