El chino que sueña con París no tiene sino que sentarse a que, "a la larga", llegue todo París a desfilar bajo su ventana. (¡Y llega!, aunque sólo se trate de algún Régis Debray con una cámara de video.) En cambio, según la misma sesuda filosofía de los barbudos, quien desea impaciente y codiciosamente algo, está garantizándose que jamás lo obtendrá. Hasta aquí los barbudos. La historia algunas veces les da la razón. En el siglo XIX muchos jóvenes de escasa o mediana fortuna, los dandies, desearon con impaciencia y codicia el nocturno mundo brillante de la elegancia, la belleza, la riqueza, el despliegue mundano y excéntrico de las artes, la ciudad como una fiesta. No lo obtuvieron sino como mascaradas o espejismos instantáneos, al costo de toda la fortuna familiar (incluso la cárcel por deudas), la salud, el desengaño. Hubo en cambio los juiciosos y algo aburridos empresarios que dedicaron su juventud al dinero, a la Bolsa y las inversiones, a los bonos de ferrocarriles, petróleo o firmas de tocinería y embutidos, y hacia los cincuenta años, sin quebrantos de salud y fortuna, sin desengaños vitales de dandy, regresaron —o ingresaron— a los salones de París con porte y desdén de amos, a recibir todos los dones y homenajes a los que aspiraban los dandies.     1. Grundideen
    Der Naturalismus ist dem Realismus verwandt, beide haben dieselben geistigen und sozialen Wurzeln. Die Naturalisten versuchten aber, die Grundideen des Realismus konsequent zu Ende zu denken, sie empfanden sich als radikaler. Diejenige Wissenschaft, von der man im 19. Jh. annahm, dass sie die Realität einzig richtig erfasse, war die Naturwissenschaft. Mithin musste sie nach Meinung der Naturalisten auch zur Grundlage der Kunst werden. Der Literaturtheoretiker Wilhelm Bölsche drückte es in seinem Buch, das den bezeichnenden Titel "Die naturwissenschaftlichen Grundlagen der Poesie" (1887) trug, folgendermaßen aus:
    "Der Dichter ... ist in seiner Weise ein Experimentator, wie der Chemiker, der allerlei Stoffe mischt, in gewisse Temperaturgrade bringt und den Erfolg beobachtet. Natürlich: der Dichter hat Menschen vor sich, keine Chemikalien. Aber... auch diese Menschen fallen ins Gebiet der Naturwissenschaften. Ihre Leidenschaften, ihr Reagieren gegen äußere Umstände, das ganze Spiel ihrer Gedanken folgen gewissen Gesetzen, die der Forscher ergründet hat und die der Dichter bei dem freien Experimente so gut zu beachten hat, wie der Chemiker, wenn er etwas Vernünftiges und keinen wertlosen Mischmasch herstellen will, die Kräfte und Wirkungen vorher berechnen muß, ehe er ans Werk geht und Stoffe kombiniert."
