[Tao Ch'ien (Tao Yuan-Ming]
Returning to Live in the Country - 1 of 5
Young, I was always free of common feeling.
It was in my nature to love the hills and mountains.
Mindlessly I was caught in the dust-filled trap.
Waking up, thirty years had gone.
The caged bird wants the old trees and air.
Fish in their pool miss the ancient stream.
I plough the earth at the edge of South Moor.
Keeping life simple, return to my plot and garden. My place is hardly more than a few fields. My house has eight or nine small rooms. Elm-trees and Willows shade the back. Plum-trees and Peach-trees reach the door. Misted, misted the distant village. Drifting, the soft swirls of smoke. Somewhere a dog barks deep in the winding lanes. A cockerel crows from the top of the mulberry tree. No heat and dust behind my closed doors. My bare rooms are filled with space and silence.

I smile and make no reply for my heart is free of care.
As the peach-blossom flows down stream and is gone into the unknown,
I have a world apart that is not among men. More Li Bai in Chinese in English Li Bai
The breeze and the dew make tranquil the clear dawn;
Behind the curtain there is one who alone is up betimes.
The orioles sing and the flowers smile -
Whose then, after all, is the Spring? More Li ShangYin in Chinese in English Li ShangYin
After I climb the chill mountain's steep stone paths, Deep in the white clouds there are homes of men. I stop my carriage, and sit to admire the maple-grove at nightfall, Whose frozen leaves are redder than the flowers of early Spring. More Du Mu in Chinese Du Mu (Tu Mu) Deserted mountains - not a man is seen, Only the sound of voices can be heard. The sunbeam, entering the deep woods

Through his poems "Shape, Shade, and Spirit," we know that he carefully considered and examined his life. Whereas most people chase after either fame or fortune, Tao Yuanming surpassed these two hurdles and attained spiritual freedom and transcendence. But we should know that he acquired his spiritual freedom and transcendence only after a certain amount of struggle. Today we have just given a brief introduction, and we will leave the rest for next time.
    Third Lecture
Last time, we briefly talked about Tao Yuanming's life story. Among Chinese poets, Tao Yuanming was the one who had the greatest peace of mind. However, he was not peaceful by nature; he obtained his calmness after much inner conflict and struggle. Now let's talk about why Tao Yuanming had such conflicts and struggles. Under the influence of Confucianism, the traditional Chinese thought, he had intended to build up his career.
Confucianism emphasizes "cultivating oneself, harmonizing one's family, administrating the country, and keeping the world in peace," and urges everyone to contribute something to benefit the people and the country. Tao Yuanming at first truly believed in this perfect ideal, but he lived in a time of political corruption, when officials fought with and assassinated one another, and planned coups to usurp power. Due to the times, Tao Yuanming was unable to develop his Confucian ideals. Failing to realize the ideals of Confucianism, he then turned to Taoism and Buddhism, which were popular in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, to help him attain inner peace.

governorship was not yet evident; he simply had a great deal of military power. Huan Xuan had submitted a proposal to Emperor An, saying that he had enough military power and was willing to put down Sun En's rebellion. There were a few other people with military strength. One was Liu Laozhi, and another was Liu Yu, who later usurped the throne. Both of them had considerable military might. Combining the power of the two, Huan Xuan successfully subdued Sun En's rebellion.
According to A Year-by-Year Biography of Tao Yuanming by Lu Qingli, Tao Yuanming was the person who submitted the military plan to the emperor on behalf of Huan Xuan, the governor of Jiangzhou at the time. Emperor An's capital was at Jiankang, so Tao Yuanming went there to submit the proposal asking for authorization to subdue Sun En.
We mentioned earlier that either political ideals or family financial pressure may be the motivation for a man to seek a government position. The first time Tao Yuanming worked for the government, it was because his family was poor and his parent was elderly. How about this time? He was probably motivated by his political ideals, for he considered Sun En a rebel. He could have thought, "If I submit this proposal to the emperor for Huan Xuan to subdue the rebellion, I will be helping to bring peace to the country, and that's a good deed." This incident probably helped Tao Yuanming define his ideals. However, after Huan Xuan subdued Sun En, Huan Xuan's own power increased tremendously and he aspired to take over the throne.

The main part of the poems are talking about love themes. Older poetry like the anthology Shijing ¸Ö¸g "Book of Songs" that already during the Spring and Autumn period became a classic, and the Chuci "Poetry of the South" is not contained in the Jade Terrace collection. Their interpreters saw these poems as writings with highly political contenct, hidden in special phrases and allegories. Later poems, from the Han time on, developed a very different style, not in verse and rhythm, but in content and intention.

Tao Yuanming (365 - 427) Tao Yuanming (365 - 427) was born in Caisang of Xunyang (in the southwest of today¡¯s Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province). Born of a strained family, he read a wide range of books in his childhood. Reluctant to meddle in the official circle, he lived a reticent life in the countryside for the last two decades of his life. His poems, essays and verse essays ranked at the top in the Jin Dynasty. His 120 odd meditative and pastoral poems, mostly five-syllabic, exerted tremendous influence on such great Tang and Song poets as Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi, Su Shi and Lu You. back previous page next page home page
