The Poet's House
Where should the Poet's house and household be?
Beneath what skies, in what untroubled air
Sings he for very joy of songs so fair
That in their steadfast laws he most is free?
In woods remote, where darkly tree on tree
Let fall their curtained shadows, to ensnare
His dreams, or hid in Fancy's happiest lair,
Some laughing island of the stormless sea?
Ah, never such to him their welcome gave!
But, flattered by the gods in finer scorn,
He drifts upon the world's unresting wave,
As drifts a sea-flower, by the tempest torn
From sheltered porches of the coral cave
Where it expands, of calm and silence born.
In Absence
Absence from thee is something worse than death;
For, to the heart that slumbers in the shroud,
What are the mourners' tears and clamours loud,
The open grave, the dismal cypress wreath?
The quiet body misses not its breath;
The pain that shivers through the weeping crowd
Is idle homage to the visage proud
That changeth not for all Affliction saith.

Nineteenth Century American Sonnets
For some commentary on the American sonnet through 1930, see a General Survey of the American Sonnet by Lewis Sterner. The first American sonnets were written by the Revolutionary War general David Humphreys in the last quarter of the 18th century and were not published until 1804. Some of the better known American sonneteers of mid-century were Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) (the Romantic link in the Sonnet Central chain), William Cullen Bryant Henry Wadsworth Longfellow John Greenleaf Whittier Jones Very ... Frederick Goddard Tuckerman (1821-1873), and Emma Lazarus (1849-1887). Also included here are many works by lesser known poets. Many of these more obscure works are taken from late 19th century anthologies, so any help with years of birth/death for the writers listed at the bottom of the page is appreciated. Here are some selections from the introduction to American Sonnets (1889), edited by William Sharp "It is, therefore, significant that in contemporary American verse, technically inferior to our own [British] as, in the main, it undoubtedly is, the motives The career of George Santayana (1863-1952), like that of Thomas Hardy, bridged the centuries; included here are his philosophical sonnets from the late 1800s.

DAUGHTER OF EGYPT by: Bayard Taylor (1825-1878)
    AUGHTER of Egypt, veil thine eyes!
    I cannot bear their fire;
    Nor will I touch with sacrifice
    Those altars of desire.
    For they are flames that shun the day,
    And their unholy light
    Is fed from natures gone astray
    In passion and in night.
    The stars of Beauty and of Sin,
    They burn amid the dark,
    Like beacons that to ruin win
    The fascinated bark.
    Then veil their glow, lest I forswear
    The hopes thou canst not crown,
    And in the black waves of thy hair
    My struggling manhood drown!

BEDOUIN SONG by: Bayard Taylor (1825-1878)
    ROM the Desert I come to thee
    On a stallion shod with fire;
    And the winds are left behind
    In the speed of my desire.
    Under thy window I stand,
    And the midnight hears my cry:
    I love thee, I love but thee,
    With a love that shall not die
    Till the sun grows cold,
    And the stars are old,
    And the leaves of the Judgment Book Unfold!
    Look from thy window and see
    My passion and my pain;
    I lie on the sands below,
    And I faint in thy disdain.
    Let the night-winds touch thy brow
    With the heat of my burning sigh,
    And melt thee to hear the vow
    Of a love that shall not die
    Till the sun grows cold,
    And the stars are old,
    And the leaves of the Judgment Book Unfold!
    My steps are nightly driven,
    By the fever in my breast,
    To hear from thy lattice breathed
    The word that shall give me rest.
    Open the door of thy heart,
    And open thy chamber door,
    And my kisses shall teach thy lips
    The love that shall fade no more
    Till the sun grows cold,
    And the stars are old,
    And the leaves of the Judgment Book Unfold!

    Text by Bayard Taylor
    Set by John Knowles Paine (1839-1906), op. 29 no. 1 I let the dearest dream depart That night to love revealed, Some eager spirit in my heart My sleeping eyes unsealed. Yet still 'twas love that led me here And bids my feet delay. Arise, and light the dawn, my dear! Look forth, look forth and bring the day. As out of darkness yonder star Of whitest ray is born As birds and blossoms feel afar The coming of the morn, So thou hast dawn'd, and now art near, To brighten and to stay: My being dies in thine, my dear! As daybreak dies in day. Back to the Lied and Song Texts Page

    III. WRITERS OF NEW YORK AND PENNSYLVANIA
    For some time, our attention has been centred for the most part in the work of our New England writers; but we must not think that the literary activity of this long period was confined to the immediate vicinity of Boston. The cities of Philadelphia and New York had each its coterie of literary workers. In the rapidly growing metropolis, the generation following that of Irving and his associates of the Knickerbocker group was not without its representatives of greater or less distinction, among whom at least two, Bayard Taylor and George William Curtis, deserve especial recognition. Both were men of letters in the broadest sense, versatile in talent and giving expression to that talent in varied literary forms.
    Bayard Taylor, 1825-1878.
    Taylor was born in a Quaker household upon a Pennsylvania farm, and as a child was conscious of two ambitions: to travel and to become a poet. His literary ambition was gratified prematurely by the publication of a volume of verse, Ximena , afterward regretted, in 1844. In the same year, his twentieth, he sailed for England, having arranged with several editors to print the letters which he purposed to write while on his travels. For nearly two years, he tramped about over Europe enduring much hardship; his letters were published in 1846, under the title of

    " Scenes of the City of Morgan Hill, Santa Clara County, California 1999 " Bayard Taylor, during his trip to California in 1849 which was commissioned by Horace Greely for the purpose of reporting what he saw and experienced to the eager readership of the New York Tribune , walked from San Francisco to Monterey to attend the Constitutional Convention then in progress. He met many people who figure importantly in California's history. And he met Martin Murphy Sr. an American settler who had arrived here before the gold rush. Martin offered Taylor the hospitality of his home and invited him for a ride to the summit of El Toro. Taylor did not meet Martin Murphy Sr.'s sons Daniel Murphy or John Murphy who were at that time in the gold fields of the Sierras in the area of what is now known as "Murphys" where they had struck it rich.

    Bayard Taylor was among the thousands of young men who spilled into California in the tumultuous year 1849. He arrived not with pick and shovel but with pen and paper, dispatched by Horace Greeley of the New York Tribune to report on the madness, exuberance, and upheaval of the California gold rush. Traveling throughout the state, Taylor witnessed the explosive growth of San Francisco and the instantaneous creation of Sierra townships. He traversed the nearly deserted lands of the Spanish missions and attended the constitutional convention that set the boundaries and forged the laws for the new state. With wit, intelligence, curiosity, and engaging humor, Taylor chronicled the birth of modern California. He had found "the richest material in the world to work upon," and his account—combining the skills of a gifted author with the freshness and immediacy of a reporter in the field—is widely regarded as a classic of western literature.
