HANNAH THURSTON :
A STORY OF AMERICAN LIFE.
G. P. Putnam, New York : 1863 464 p. + Publisher's ads (2 p.). 12mo. 19 cm. Contemporary binding with a black morocco spine over marbled boards. All edges marbled. Bayard Taylor was one of the most celebrated writers of his time. His travel-writings are still widely read. He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Apprenticed to a printer, he wrote a book of poems, and then visited Europe, and then gained a post as a traveling correspondent for the 'New York Tribune'.
This American tale was probably composed while he was Secretary to the Legation at St. Petersburg. "I do not rest the interest of the book on its slender plot, but on the fidelity with which it represents certain types of characters and phases of society. That in it which most resembles caricature is oftenest the transcript of actual fact... which may now and then be heard in almost any country community of the Northern and Western States." Home History Plungers Mission Statement Why a usedtaylors.com web page? Did you know that, in addition to being a fine brand of wine (their California red and New York State burgundy are our personal faves), pork sausages and golf clubs, this brand name is shared by a not as well-known brand of plumbing supplies, notably some truly bodacious (and attractive) plungers? We felt that any product that does so much for us in so many ways is deserving of its own page on the internet, so here we are. If you have, or have access to, any other (strictly non-musical) products that bear the name "taylor" or "taylors" or "taylor's" we'd like to hear from you. In fact we'd like to publish a photo of that product and give you credit for the photo. Any story or background you can provide us would be greatly appreciated. History of Kennett Square - the Long Version Settlements, Townships, and Boroughs
Before the European settlers came to this region it was populated by the Lenni-Lenape Indians. The name Kennett originates with Francis Smith who came to this region in 1686. He was a native of Devizes, in Wiltshire, England, in which there is a village called "Kennet." The name is first mentioned in court records in 1705. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century Kennett was a small village located where the road from Chester to Baltimore intersected with the road from Lancaster to Wilmington. It was at this intersection that the Unicorn Tavern was built in 1735 by Joseph Musgrave, the largest landowner in what is now Kennett Square. In 1776 Musgrave sold his property to Colonel Joseph Shippen, the uncle of Peggy Shippen, who became the wife of Benedict Arnold. Travelers found the village a good place to stop, including Baron Wilhelm van Knyphausen and General Sir William Howell, who stayed for one night before marching to the Battle of the Brandywine against George Washington at Chadds Ford in 1777. By 1810 there was a village of about eight dwellings, five of which were log, but it was not until 1853 that a group of citizens petitioned the Court of Quarter Sessions of Chester to form a borough. After several petitions and objections from farmers, the court granted the articles of incorporation and Kennett Square held its first local elections in 1855.

As this site has grown in size and scope, locating information on specific subjects has become increasingly difficult. It is not, as yet, a comprehensive index, but a good beginning. Strength of the African Studies Collection
The nineteen libraries that are part of Cornell University Library constitute a major resource for learning, teaching, and research. All have specialized collections supporting the university's academic programs. Based on the number of volumes in its collections, Cornell University Library is one of the dozen largest academic research libraries in the United States. Library holdings in African Studies total approximately 60,000 titles chiefly representing the humanities and social sciences, but with holdings on Africa in several libraries focusing on agriculture, law, business, labor, music, and fine arts. This figure includes over 1,700 serial titles, nearly 1,900 language and linguistics titles, and over 400 audio-visual and computer data files. Subject strengths within the African Studies collection are in class P (language and literature), DT (history), and HC-HJ (economic policy). These areas represent 74% of our effort. It is difficult to estimate how many microforms on Africa Cornell has, but among its holdings are significant collections including: the Foreign Broadcast Information Service's Daily Report (1980-) on the Middle East and Africa, the Joint Publications Research Service's Sub-Saharan Africa Report (1978-), material relating to Africa in the Human Relations Area Files, the British Sessional Papers, including those of the British Colonial Office, having a great deal of information on Anglophone Africa, and rich holdings in French documents from the colonial period.

DEUTSCHE LITERARISCHE "FAUST"-ADAPTATIONEN
