    Tribute To Sara Teasdale
    Collected Poems
Poetry, as defined in the dictionary, is lofty thought or impassioned feeling expressed in imaginative words. A poet is then a person who has the gift of poetic thought, imagination and creation, together with eloquence of expression. I have always loved words and the beauty they possessed in the hands of a skilled artisan. But it wasn't until I discovered Sara Teasdale in my early teens that I realized their true strength. In Sara's hands, words transformed into the warm, rich colors of the heart...sang of the clear, direct song from the soul. In her simplicity was genius. This is my tribute to her.

    Life has loveliness to sell,
    All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings,
    And childrens's faces looking up
    Holding wonder in a cup.
    Life has loveliness to sell,
Music like a curve of gold,
Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness

    "The Solitary" Sara Teasdale
Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) was raised and educated in St. Louis and traveled to Europe and the Near East. After returning to the United States, she settled in New York and lived a life very similar to the independent "solitary" she describes in this poem. Her published works include Rivers to the Sea (1915) and Love Songs (1917). Love Songs went through five editions in one year and won Teasdale a special Pulitzer award, the first given to a book of poetry.

    American Poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)
Although she won the first Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1918, Sara Teasdale does not occupy a significant place in American literary history, despite being called a 'lyric poet of an unusually pure and spontaneous gift' in a 1913 poetry anthology, and little information about her is available on the Web or in contemporary literary anthologies. This lack of stature may be due in to the critical judgment that the delicacy, sensitivity, and personal nature of her poems reflect the tastes of a specific time and are now out of fashion. Sara was born in Saint Louis, Missouri. She was tutored at home for awhile and then sent to private school where she first began experimenting with poetry. After graduation, she traveled for two years throughout Europe and the Middle East and when she returned to the States in 1907, Sara published her first collection, Sonnets to Duce and Other Poems . Another volume followed four years later, and it was this book

    JOY by: Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)
AM wild, I will sing to the trees,
I will sing to the stars in the sky,
I love, I am loved, he is mine,
Now at last I can die!
I am sandaled with wind and with flame,
I have heart-fire and singing to give,
I can tread on the grass or the stars,
Now at last I can live!

I SHALL NOT CARE by: Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)
HEN I am dead and over me bright April
      Shakes out her rain-drenched hair,
Tho' you should lean above me broken-hearted,
      I shall not care.
I shall have peace, as leafy trees are peaceful
When rain bends down the bough,
And I shall be more silent and cold-hearted
      Than you are now.
I love too much; I am a river
Surging with spring that seeks the sea,
I am too generous a giver,
Love will not stoop to drink of me.
His feet will turn to desert places
Shadowless, reft of rain and dew,
Where stars stare down with sharpened faces
      From heavens pitilessly blue.
And there at midnight sick with faring,
He will stoop down in his desire
To slake the thirst grown past all bearing
In stagnant water keen as fire.
