    Country profile- Australia (History) First gold rush (1851) NB! Unless indicated otherwise, this information has not yet been - authenticated back to the original source. Therefore, until it is, you should treat the details with caution (especially any text in pink Alexander DALRYMPLE (1737-1808), an official of the East India Company, proposed a voyage to the South Pacific to observe the passage of Venus. He selected the Endeavour, but the government replaced him at the last moment with Captain James COOK (1728-1779) , who was given DALRYMPLE's "good composite of map of Mandalas' Solomon Islands, de Queiros's New Hebrides, Tasman's track south and east of Australia, and Schouten's track along the north coast of New Guinea, and Dutch New Holland." 25 Aug 1768 Under the command of James COOK (1728-1779) The Endeavour left Plymouth on 25 Aug 1768 29 Apr 1770 The first landing in Australia by Captain James COOK' s expedition (consisting of 94 men in the Endeavour) was at Botany Bay on 29 Apr 1770. He then sailed up the east coast of Australia.
