Sir John Tenniel

John Tenniel, the son of a dancing-master, was born in London in 1820. Tenniel attended the Royal Academy but left in disgust at the quantity of teaching he received. When Tenniel was sixteen he began having his paintings exhibited at the Suffolk Street Galleries. He was soon recognised as a talented artist and he received several commissions, including the production of a fresco for the House of Lords
Tenniel had some cartoons accepted by Punch Magazine and one showing Lord John Russell as David with his sword of truth attacking Cardinal Wiseman, as the

ohn Tenniel, the famous illustrator, was born in London, England , the son of a dancing master and fencing instructor. He studied briefly at the Royal Academy Schools and Clipstone Street Art Society, but was otherwise self-trained. He first exhibited his oil painting at the Society of British Artists in 1836, and then at the Royal Academy from 1837-42. At the suggestion of Douglas Jerrold, the management of Punch invited him to become the magazine's second cartoonist when Richard Doyle (a Catholic) resigned in December, 1850, over that publication's satiric attacks on the papacy. From this period Tenniel was also a book illustrator, notably in his work for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) (1865) and Through the Looking-glass (1872), although he also contributed illustrations to S. C. Hall's The Book of British Ballads Heath's Book of Beauty (1845), Fouque's Undine , and Thomas James's edition of Aesop's Fables (1848). He acted in Dickens's amateur theatricals in 1851. In 1893, despite the loss of an eye in a fencing match with his father in 1840, he was recognized for a lifetime's distinguished service in art with a knighthood.

ohn Tenniel, who best known today for his illustrations to the Alice books , was born in London in 1820, the son of a dancing master and fencing instructor. He studied at the schools of the British Royal Academy and at the Clipstone Street Art society, but was largely self-taught as a book illustrator and periodical cartoonist. At the age of 16, he exhibited his first oil painting at the Society of British Artists. In 1840, while fencing with his father, he was blinded in one eye, according to his biographer, F. Sartzano in Sir John Tenniel (1948). In 1845, he was awarded a premium for a sixteen-foot cartoon of The Spirit of Justice , although the Fine Arts Commission awarded Daniel Maclise £250 for the oil painting which sits behind the Strangers' Gallery in Westminster's House of Lords. There in "The Hall of Poets" one may still see Tenniel's fresco illustrating John Dryden's Saint Cecilia Some three years younger than Punch regular and Dickens Christmas Book illustrator John Leech (1817-64) and considerably younger than Clarkson Stanfield, R. Sir John Tenniel and the Alice Books
Historians of children's literature universally agree that the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) marks the liberation of children's books from the restraining hands of the moralists (OCCL, 102). Indeed, Harvey Darton went so far as to call it the first unapologetic appearance of "liberty of thought" in children's books. About the pleasures of the text he remarked, "Henceforth fear had gone, and with it shy disquiet. There was to be in hours of pleasure no more dread about the moral value, the ponderable, measured quality and extent, of the pleasure itself. It was to be enjoyed and even promoted with neither forethought nor remorse ."
This slide shows the frontispiece and title page of the rare withdrawn 1865 first edition. The red color that Carroll preferred for the binding is also visible. Apparently the fault, which Tenniel objected to, was very slight - some of the blocks had been printed rather lightly.
These slides show the skill and light touch Tenniel had in representing animals. He was not, however, all that successful with human anatomy: Alice's head seems slightly larger than her delicate frame can support. In slide 82, the Dodo is Dodgson himself. Note also the monkey in the background, who is not mentioned in the text. Considering the intellectual currents at the time, and the fact that the Dodo was known to be an extinct bird (Darwin), it seems likely that Tenniel was alluding to the debate about natural selection and evolution.
