Life Lines
June - October 2001
Displayed at the University Library in Small's Wynd, this exhibition
provides a unique opportunity to see some of the most simple but delightful
works of art in the University Museum Collections. Although the style and
content varies considerably, each work reveals an artist who has the ability
to re-create life with just a few lines on paper. On this page we have reproduced most of the images on display, plus a few
that we wanted to include but didn't have space for...
Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
Delia Now one of the most popular Victorian artists, Rossetti and his fellow Pre-Raphaelites were bitterly attacked by their contemporaries. Rossetti's sensuous female portraits are among the most memorable images in British art, and this pencil drawing is probably a study for the 1867 version of a watercolour entitled The Return of Tibullus to Delia, which Rossetti had first attempted in 1851-3. The model is one of Rossetti's regulars, possibly Alexa Wilding.
Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1896)
A Sketch for The Germ A child prodigy, Millais aged 11 became the youngest ever student at the Royal Academy. In 1848 he became one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, but his style became much broader. In 1853 he came to Scotland with John Ruskin, settling in Perth (and marrying Ruskin's ex-wife). Millais also had a successful career illustrating books such as Willmot's Poets of the 19th Century, and the magazines Once a Week and Good Words. In the last year of his life, Millais was elected president of the Royal Academy.

    HISTORY OF CHILDREN'S
    BOOK ILLUSTRATION:
Before the turn of the 20th century, children were likened to "little adults". Since most families could not afford many books or were illiterate, only the affluent children owned books. Most publications were textbooks or moral guides that discouraged frivolity. Not all of the world showed such Dikensian sobriety- there were some exceptions to this rule. The orient was producing playful scrolls as far back as the 12th century. Although dense in prose, Lewis Carroll's Alice through the Looking Glass with beautifully illustrated engravings by Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914) stands out to this day. In America

ftp://metalab.unc.edu/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/etext94/algif10.zip The key is to search for "illustrations" in the title. This was not at first apparent to me. I was looking for keywords in the "Notes" field, thinking perhaps illustrations would be included with the etexts themselves. Apparently some PDF versions do contain cover art, but collections of images are entered in under a seperate title. Still, "illustrations" only turned up two matches, so it seems that there is much work to be done in this area (unless they're hiding the images somewhere and my search strategy just sucks ;) Anyway, before we re-invent the wheel, an exhaustive search should be done to determine if there aren't already "free image" projects out there that meet our needs. I'm beginning to poke through my favourite portals to see what I can find. I'll post anything else that turns up. Ben nSLUG http://www.nslug.ns.ca

Before we proceed any further, I must emphasize the fact that the author recommends that any prospective purchaser obtains a copy of the aforementioned books before delving into the deck in earnest - the reader should of course aim to purchase a copy that utilizes Sir John Tenniel's original illustrations as the imagery contained within the Wonderland tarot is (as noted above) based on his exceptional artwork. The tarot student will note upon opening the deck that the Wonderland tarot 'breaks with tradition with its suit signs, in order that the deck might more accurately reflect the Alice books.' The Wonderland suits therefore are as follows: flamingos (swords), pepper mills (wands), hats (cups) and oysters (pentacles). Alice fans will no doubt be squealing with delight at this point! The deck as a whole is wonderfully presented, although is a little smaller than most standard sized tarot decks. The artwork is superb throughout and the colour scheme is vibrant. The Major Arcana contains a host of well known characters from the Alice books (The Mad Hatter appears as the Fool for example, and the Cheshire Cat becomes the Emperor) and these characters can also be found dotted throughout the Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana has traditional playing card suits noted in the corners, although this should come as no surprise to the Alice lover. The back of the deck is also incredibly lovely, and takes the form of a pastel rosebud design - again, this comes as no surprise to anyone that has read Carroll's books.

    From Enemy to Ally
I n the more than 200 years since the American Revolution, the United States and Great Britain have moved from enmity to a firm alliance often spoken of as the "special relationship." However, the road to this friendship was not smooth. T he hostility aroused in the United States by the American Revolution was inflamed by various disputes that arose between the two nations during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815). The main issue was the forcible seizure of American seamen by the British Navy but disputes also arose about commerce, Indian policy, and boundaries. The spiraling anger culminated in what is known in the United States as the War of 1812, a conflict considered in Britain as a sideshow to the struggle against Napoleon. More or less a draw, the war was concluded in 1814 by the Treaty of Ghent. The treaty resolved none of the issues for which the United States had fought, but it created a framework for future friendly relations between the United States and Great Britain. I n the following decades, the two nations quarreled about the Canadian boundary but settled the disputes by negotiation. The American Civil War brought Britain and the United States to the edge of hostilities because of attacks against Union commerce by Southern ships fitted out in British ports. After the war the British apologized to the United States for their part in the actions of the Confederate marauders and paid a large indemnity for losses suffered, a sign that the United States had emerged from the war as a powerful nation whose good will Britain now wished to secure.

Lewis Carroll: Through the Looking Glass

    Hepburn 99
This month’s book is a first edition of Lewis Carroll’s classic Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Macmillan, 1866). This second book sold extremely well, with 15,000 copies being bought in the first seven weeks following publication. Most children's books of this time were instructional or were dry tales with a pious moral message so it is not surprising that the satirical and witty Alice books flourished, being enjoyed by adults as well as children. Lewis Carroll was the pseudonym of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), a shy mathematics don at Christ Church, Oxford. He was extremely fond of children and loved to entertain them with puzzles, games and stories he had devised. The Alice books were based on stories he told to entertain the three eldest daughters of the Reverend Henry George Liddell, Dean of Christ Church. Many of the characters in the book would be instantly recognisable to them as they were based on people they knew, in and around Oxford. Dodgson’s favourite of the daughters was Alice and it was she who became the heroine of the stories.

    Children's Literature
Island 3: Mid-Century Developments - Some Women Writers and the Renascence of Wonder Anna Maria Hall Hall (1800-1881) was one of the most prolific Victorian writers for children, best known for such moral tales as Grandmamma's Pockets (1849) and for her editorship of the annual, the Juvenile Forget Me Not (1828-1837). Displayed here is her beautifully-produced giftbook Midsummer Eve: A Fairytale of Loving and Being Loved (London: J. C. Hotten, 1870). The magic lantern and Uncle Tom's Cabin Perhaps because of its strong story-line, clear morality, and the good central child character, Eva St. Clair, the American abolitionist novel Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (first serialized 1851-52) was soon pirated and abridged to become a children's classic. Although the book presents both African-American and white characters through melodrama and stereotype, the novel has received increasing critical reappraisal in recent years. Displayed here on a "sub-island" is a complete set of Victorian hand-painted glass slides of incidents from the novel, designed for an instructive magic-lantern presentation. Collection of Patrick Scott.

Articles Science Fiction Art by Jeff Robinson It can be argued that the origins of Science Fiction art date back to the works of Leonardo da Vinci While his drawings were definitely art, and inarguably science, many of his drawings were of devices that did not exist during his time. Thus, while his elaborate plans for submersible ships, tanks and flying machines were made seriously, they were also fantasies of fiction. Leonardo da Vince might therefore be considered the first science fiction illustrator. Some of the most famous early illustrations that set a standard for early science fiction works were created by the English artist Sir John Tenniel (1820-1914), who rose to fame as the illustrator of Lewis Carroll ’s Alice in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass While not considered science fiction, Lewis Carroll’s works were fantasy and contemporary satire that attracted great attention. The elaborate and imaginative pen and ink drawings that accompanied these books became standards for SF literature for decades to come. In the mid-nineteenth century, the industrial revolution had sufficiently affected society at large to the point that “scientific romance” stories, which would later be called
