Anatole FRANCE [Jacques Anatole Francois Thibault] (1844 - 1924)
Anatole France, the pseudonym for Jacques Anatole Francois Thibault, was a French novelist, poet, and critic who was regarded as the most respected writer of his time. Early in his literary career, France published several popular works : Poemes Dores [Golden Verses], The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard, At the Sign of the Reine Pedauque, and The Mother-of-Pearl Box. In 1908, France published his fable of modern French History, the social satire Penguin Island. He followed with the historical work The Gods Are Athirst, in 1912. His vast classical knowledge is displayed in Thais. In recognition of his literary accomplishments, France was elected to the Academie Francaise in 1896 and was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1921. Literature : Penguin Island (1908).
