The marriage of Adam Carrithers and Mary Cunnignham is recorded in Shelby County as Spence was not erected until 1824.
They lived with James and Mary (Porter) Carrithers. In 1812 Adam purchased the farm from his parents, added the brick room on the south side with a stairway leading to the room above. This room has two casement windows and is one of the most attractive rooms in the House. The stairway has long ago been removed.
