61. The Tribune - Windows - This Above All
There can be little doubt that Francis Thompson (18591907) was inspiredby the words of Psalm 139 when composing The Hound of Heaven.

There’s no escape from God
Khushwant Singh O
N my birthdays a few friends ring up, write or send greeting telegrams wishing me many happy returns of the day. Two of them are concerned about my continued disbelief in the existence of God and what its consequences will be when I come face to face with my Maker. One is Jaya Thadani, who divides her time living in London with her husband and with her son and grandchildren in the States. She asked me whether I had read Francis Thompson’s The Hound of Heaven . I replied I had. She said, "Read it again more carefully." The other is Nirmala Mathan, who lives in Bangalore. She said: "Do me a favour. Read Psalm 139 this morning." That was all she had to say as a birthday greeting. The pertinent part of Psalm 139 reads: "Where can I go from Your spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there. If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, "surely the darkness shall fall on me," even the night shall be light about me; indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to You."

    Inadvertent Doggerel
    Tony Rogers' Inadvertent Doggerel is a celebration of a particular feature of Victorian literature — accidental trash poetry. Included are examples from the pen of the heroic William McGonagall, together with a couple of blunders from a lesser Poet Laureate (Alfred Austin), and even something awkward from the great Francis Thompson. The Victorian era seems to have been peculiarly prone to fits of unconscious bad verse composition Print This Issue

    Inadvertent Doggerel — Tony Rogers
    Ever since that suggestion on the front page of Issue 3 , Bikwilians everywhere have rallied to the cause of de-closeting and dusting off the hopeless rhymes of their youth and at last getting them into print, even if (or, more like it, mainly because) they discharge this heavy duty anonymously. All well and good, but there is, you know, another type of doggerel already in print: the accidental sort.
    Readers will need little introduction to the excruciating verse of Scottish handloom weaver William McGonagall (1830-1902). He used to sign himself “Wm. McGonagall, Poet and Tragedian”, but history knows him better as “the world’s worst poet”, or at least as

    -Francis Thompson 1859-1907-
    I fled Him, down the nights and down the days;
    I fled Him, down the arches of the years;
    I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways
    Of my own mind; and in the mist of tears
    I hid from Him, and under running laughter.
    Up vistaed hopes I sped;
    And shot, precipitated,
    Adown Titanic glooms of chasmèd fears, From those strong Feet that followed, followed after. But with unhurrying chase, And unperturbed pace, Deliberate speed, majestic instancy, They beat and a Voice beat More instant than the Feet "All things betray thee, who betrayest Me." I pleaded, outlaw-wise, By many a hearted casement, curtained red, Trellised with intertwining charities; (For, though I knew His love Who followèd, Yet was I sore adread Lest, having Him, I must have naught beside); But, if one little casement parted wide, The gust of His approach would clash it to. Fear wist not to evade, as Love wist to pursue. Across the margent of the world I fled, And troubled the gold gateways of the stars

    The Poets
    When it comes to learning the great truths of life, the poets are not to be despised! The great poets, of course, unconsciously rely for their inspiration upon the right hemisphere of the brain, which as neurologists have now discovered, provide us with creative, imaginative and intuitive insights, rather than reasoning, calculation and analysis of the left hemisphere. Shakespeare, Blake, Milton, Wordsworth, Dante Alighieri, Shelley, Keats, Browning and Francis Thompson spring to mind, to mention just a few. Fear no more the heat of the sun
    Nor the cold winds bitter rages.
    Golden boys and girls all must
    Like chimney sweepers.
    Come to dust.
    From a great wealth of material, the following is a very modest selection:-
    And, whilst I praise
    The sparkling of thy looks and call them rays
    Takes wing
    Leaving behind him as he flies
    An unperceived dimness in thine eyes.
    Do make us old And every sand of his fleet glass, Increasing age as it does pass.
    Jasper Mayne (1604-16720). He finally enjoins us:- Lets number out the hours by blisses And count the minutes by kisses.

    400 items. Francis Thompson (1859–1907), poet and prose writer, was born in Preston, Lancashire, and studied medicine unsuccessfully at Owens College from 1876 to 1882, three times failing his examinations. He moved to London, where he fell prey to opium addiction and suffered destitution. He published his first volume of poetry in 1893; this included his most famous work, 'The Hound of Heaven'. The collection, which was accumulated by John Francis Power and purchased by the Library in 1969, comprises first editions of Thompson’s poems and prose, with critical and biographical publications. Very few of the items described by Stonehill are wanting. There is an especially fine edition of The Hound of Heaven (Chatto and Windus, 1914), and an edition of the Works printed at Bernard Newdigate’s Arden Press for Francis and Wilfrid Meynell (1913). The latter volume is handsomely bound in full vellum, with an autograph letter from Wilfrid and two typescript notes from Francis tipped in. Wilfrid Meynell was Thompson’s editor, friend and literary executor. Finding aids: recorded in general printed-book catalogue Location: JRULM (Deansgate).
