Educated at Edinburgh, he went to London, took a post as tutor, and became acquainted with such literary celebrities as Gay, Arbuthnot, and Pope. His most famous poem, The Seasons, The Seasons, Thomson's faithful, sensitive descriptions of external nature were a direct challenge to the urban and artificial school of Pope and influenced the forerunners of romanticism, such as Gray and Cowper. His other important poems are Liberty (1735-36), a tribute to Britain, and The Castle of Indolence (1748), written in imitation of Spenser and reflecting the poet's delight in idleness. Thomson also wrote a series of tragedies along classical lines, with a strong political flavor. He is remembered for his darkly pessimistic poem The City of Dreadful Night. He was raised in an orphan asylum and became (1851) an army teacher at Ballincollig, Ireland. In 1862 he was dismissed from the service for a very minor offense, became a clerk in London, and contributed (using the signature B.V.) to the National Reformer, the magazine of his friend Charles Bradlaugh. Thomson's life in London was lonely and impoverished, aggravated by insomnia, his own incredibly melancholic disposition, and periodic bouts with alcoholism. His greatest poetical work, The City of Dreadful Night (1880, first published in the National Reformer, Fraser's Magazine, 1869) is an example of his lyric gift. Vane's Story (1880) and A Voice from the Nile (1884) are later collections of his poems. Thomson also wrote many essays and criticisms. James Thomson James Thomson was one of the most influential British poets, yet there is no significant writer, before or since, more disparaged. John Veitch in The Feeling for nature in Scottish poetry offered an explanation for this paradox by pointing out that English was not his native language, but a foreign language which he had to acquire. Thomson's seminal work, The Seasons (1726-30, revised 1744), is a laboured and uneasy epic poem, yet it is considered to be the first substantial poem in English to have Nature, or, perhaps, the landscape, as its main subject. Thomson is, properly, credited by historians of the Picturesque, with occupying a position analogous to that of Claude or Poussin in painting. The Seasons is said to have inspired Turner , and Wordsworth and Coleridge Haydn used a translation of The Seasons as text for his oratorio Die Jahreszeiten Thomson was probably born in Ednam, Roxburghshire in 1700, the son of a minister, but he was taken as a babe in arms to the parish of Southdean in a remote fold in the wild hill country under Carter Bar where he was brought up, and of which he may well have been thinking when he celebrated: Rough rugged rocks, wet marshes, ruined towers

James Thomson ("B.V.") Poet James Thomson was born in Port Glasgow on 23rd November 1834. His father, in the merchant navy, suffered a stroke aboard ship, which caused a character change, making him incapable and depressed. His mother died when he was still a child, leading to his being educated in the Royal Caledonian Orphan Asylum in London and he went on to study to become an army schoolmaster. Although generally competent, he concentrated his attentions on literature, especially Shelley , and translating foreign works. While training at Ballincollig in Ireland in the early 1850s, he fell deeply in love with a colleague's daughter, Matilda Weller . When about two years later (now at Chelsea) he learned of her death he took it very badly and never fully recovered. His literary works, although often "strikingly original", gave vent to the already present melancholy side of his life. He was to be criticised as an "emotional paralytic" with life (in his own words) "a long defeat". Perhaps this was in part because he felt unrecognised. His output only appeared in such publications as Tait's Edinburgh magazine and The National reformer , a newspaper owned and edited by a friend, Charles Bradlaugh , and so did not reach a wide readership. The latter pieces were written under the pseudonym "B.V." standing for "

Feedback Significant Scots James Thomson THOMSON, JAMES, a celebrated poet, was born, September 11, 1700, at Ednam, near Kelso, of which parish his father was minister. Beatrix Trotter, the mother of the poet, was daughter and co-heiress of a small portion of land at Foggo in Berwickshire, and is described as having been a woman of "a singular fervour of imagination," at the same time that she shone in the domestic and social virtues. The difficulty with which his father supported his family, having nine children, occasioned his removal, in the early childhood of the poet, to the parish of Southdean, in the presbytery of Jedburgh, where the stipend, though not He was, nevertheless, prevailed upon to commence a course of study in Edinburgh. In the second year of his attendance at the university, his studies were interrupted by the sudden death of his father. He was summoned home to receive his parent’s dying benediction, but came too late. This circumstance contributed to increase his sorrow, and his filial piety was expressed on this mournful occasion in instances of conduct which his surviving relations afterwards delighted to recollect. The lord chancellor soon after died, and, Thomson having neglected to apply for a renewal of his place, it was bestowed by the succeeding judge, lord Hardwicke, upon another. The poet was, therefore, reduced once more to a dependence on his talents for support. It is creditable to him, that, while in this painful situation, he showed, in his letters to a friend in Edinburgh, an affectionate anxiety to assist the narrow circumstances of his sisters, Jean and Elizabeth, who then lived with Mr Gusthart, one of the ministers of the city. He was introduced, about this time, by Mr (afterwards lord) Littleton, to the prince of Wales; and, being questioned as to the state of his affairs, he answered. "that they were in a more poetical posture than formerly:" which induced the prince to bestow upon him a pension of one hundred pounds a-year.
