Henry David Thoreau Quotes
The language of friendship is not words but meanings. The most I can do for my friend is to simply to be a friend. Goodness is the only investment that never fails. If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. Men profess to be lovers of music, but for the most part they give no evidence of it in their opinions and lives that they have heard it. It would not leave them narrow-minded and bigoted. There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root. I came into this world, not chiefly to make this a good place to live in, but to live in it, be it good or bad. Men have a singular desire to be good without being good for anything. We hear and apprehend only what we already half know. It takes two to speak truth - One to speak, and another to hear. Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth. The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready.

Thoreau, Henry David (1817-1862)
Distrust any enterprise that requires new clothes. Goodness is the only investment which never fails. I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance than I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn. It is an interesting question how far men would retain their relative rank if they were divested of their clothes. Men have become the tools of their tools. Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it. The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready. What recommends commerce to me is its enterprise and bravery. It does not clasp its hands and pray to Jupiter. Main page

III. HENRY D. THOREAU:
While several of those who composed this group of transcendental thinkers in the Concord circle became more or less noted either for eccentricity or utterance, the most remarkable among them all, after Emerson, was Henry David Thoreau. A genuine lover of nature a naturalist first of all he was also a philosopher and a poet, too, although a crude one. He was misunderstood by most of those who knew or heard of him while he lived, and these were not many, but by the inner circle of the transcendentalists he was comprehended and beloved. It is characteristic of his career that but two of his books were published in his lifetime while his published writings now number twenty volumes.

not here?" He was a friend of John Brown; and declared that "any man more right than his neighbors constitutes a majority of one already." He regarded only what was necessary as desirable. "A man is rich," he said, "in proportion to the number of things which he can afford to let alone." His acquaintance with Emerson began early. He was for a time a member of his household, and during Emerson's visit to England in 1847, Thoreau occupied his house and took charge of affairs during his absence. Concerning Thoreau's qualifications as a naturalist, Emerson has this to say:

Thoreau Biography Extracts ... Web Links Thoreau earned his place in history and in The Ecology Hall of Fame on July 4, 1845, when he moved to Walden Pond, "to live deliberately." Over the past century and a half, millions have read his musings on his life there and been inspired. That day defined his life. His time at Walden, slightly over two years, demonstrated the natural harmony that was possible when a thinking man went to live simply, reading books, writing in his diary, cultivating his beans, and walking in the woods. The message that comes through most clearly from the pages of Walden is that this is, itself, a "Hero's journey." During his life, Thoreau was little known outside his small social and intellectual circle. Yet his reputation as a prophet for ecological thought and the value of wilderness, born at Walden, now grows with each passing year. He articulated the idea that humans are part of nature and that we function best, as individuals and societies, when we are concious of that fact. Biography of Henry David Thoreau
Henry David Thoreau was born on July 12, 1817, in Concord, Massachusetts. He was the son of John and Cynthia Thoreau, and the third of four children. Out of his two sisters and a brother, Helen was the oldest sister, John Thoreau Jr. was Henry's older brother and Sophia was the younger sister. The house they were born in belonged to his maternal grandmother and is located on the outskirts of Concord on Virginia Road. Henry was named after his paternal uncle, David Thoreau, who died just six weeks after Henry was born. However, his legal name is not Henry David Thoreau but rather 'David Henry Thoreau'. It wasn't until after Thoreau had graduated from Harvard College that he unilaterally changed his name from David Henry to 'Henry David' Thoreau. Not out of character, he never bothered to petition the state legislature to have his name legally and officially changed. Henry spent the majority of his time walking in and around the town of Concord, although he did make a few journeys to other places. Occasionally he would be found sauntering and conversing with his mentor and friend

Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other's eyes for an instant? Henry David Thoreau, Walden Henry David Thoreau is the person that has most lived out the hippy philosophy in my opinion. In a time when the Mexican War was raging, and slavery was still predominant, he protested. Not many people had it in them to stand up against slavery at this time, or live such a subtle life as Thoreau.
At one point he refused to pay his pole tax and was jailed for his action. He refused to send money to a government that was using the funds to fight an unjust war and expand slavery further west. This is reminiscent to the young men who were drafted during the Vietnam war, and chose jail over going completely against their values and morals.
Everywhere Henry went, he lived and breathed the hippy philosophy. There may have not been a word for it in those days, but he was definately a hippy. When he had the need to make money, he did odd jobs. He was a very happy, very simple, poor man. When he came to live at the shore of Walden Pond, his only friends were his flute, the trees, and his journal. His life was simplified in such a way that most people can only dream of. While Ralph Waldo Emerson preached the Transcendental philosophy, Thoreau lived it.
He didn't reach fame until long after his death. Fame can truly change a person, and being a writer in a secluded area was good for Henry. While others, such as John Lennon, used their fame to get their point across, Thoreau led a quiet example for others to follow. He was a simple and common man, but his mind was complex. His philosophy was one that blazed a trail that we all can follow, yet he encouraged us to take our own path. Henry David Thoreau was a true hippy.

Picture credit The Beckman Archive Writer and thinker Henry Thoreau lived in the 19th century, from 1817-1862. Although he was regarded as unimportant during his lifetime, his writings have been a large influence on the 20th century. He was an anti-slavery advocate, and helped escaped slaves on the Underground Railway. His essay Civil Disobedience in which he advocated passive resistance to unjust authority influenced Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King.
His most powerful legacy, however, is his book Walden , the story of how he simplified his life by living for two years in a little cabin he built in the woods outside of Concord, Massachusets. For most of his adult life Thoreau spent a large part of each day observing the plants and animals of Concord. Walden is some of the best nature writing ever, and has opened nature's wonder to many thousands. Thoreau kept a journal for many yearswhen it was published after he died it was fourteen books long. His essay "Succession of Forest Trees" (1860) is a major contribution to natural history.

Issues and Themes
Though Thoreau was not really recognized in his own time, he is known today as the most challenging major American author. He is also known as a transcendentalist along with other great writers, such as Bronson Alcott, Margaret Fuller, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. His style of prose is exhibited in such works as The Maine Woods , "Resistance to Civil Government," and Walden . These pieces of literature focus on the importance of nature and individualism . Thoreau tried to convey the idea to live life, not just walk through it. He wanted people to reevaluate their lives and see what was really important.
