Tocqueville, Alexis de The Old Regime and the Revolution, Volume I The Complete Text Cloth $32.50sp 0-226-80529-8 Spring 1998 Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) is familiar to readers as the author of Democracy in America , the most-quoted book written about the United States. The Old Regime and the Revolution is Tocqueville's great meditation on the origins and meanings of the French Revolution. One of the most profound and influential studies of this pivotal event, it remains a relevant and stimulating discussion of the problem of preserving individual and political freedom in the modern world. Writing in 1851, Tocqueville showed the continuity of French political behavior and social attitudes before and after the Revolution. He discussed the dangers to political freedom posed by tendencies towards government centralization and persistent class hostility that endured from the old regime to the Revolution and beyond. A major scholarly event, this handsomely produced book will be the definitive English edition of one of the great books in modern intellectual history.

Tocqueville, Alexis de The Old Regime and the Revolution, Volume II Notes on the French Revolution and Napoleon Cloth $45.00sp 0-226-80533-6 Fall 2001 With his monumental work The Old Regime and the Revolution , Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859)-best known for his classic Democracy in America envisioned a multivolume philosophic study of the origins of modern France that would examine the implications of French history on the nature and development of democratic society. Volume 1, which covered the eighteenth-century background to the Revolution, was published to great acclaim in 1856. On the continuation of this project, he wrote: "When this Revolution has finished its work, [this volume] will show what that work really was, and what the new society which has come from that violent labor is, what the Revolution has taken away and what it has preserved from that old regime against which it was directed." Tocqueville died in the midst of this work. Here in volume 2in clear, up-to-date Englishis all that he had completed, including the chapters he started for a work on Napoleon, notes and analyses he made in the course of researching and writing the first volume, and his notes on his preparation for his continuation. Based on the new French edition of

Alexis de Tocqueville
Writer and statesman, b. at Verneuil, Department of Seine-et-Oise, 29 July 1805; d. at Cannes, 16 April, 1859. He was the great grandson of Malesherbes, the defender of Louis XVI. As a judge at Versailles in 1830 he formed a friendship with Gustave de Beaumont, with whom he traveled to America in 1831. Tocqueville's letters show that he foresaw what strides the Church was destined to made in America and likewise the dogmatic nothingness which would result from Unitarianism and the absurdities of Illuminism. Two publications resulted from this journey; the collective work of two friends published under the title Du système pénitentiaire aux Etats-Unis et de son Application en France ; the second, Tocqueville's personal work, is the celebrated book La démocratie en Amérique , of which the first volume appeared in 1835 and the second in 1840. The work won for Tocqueville admission to the Académie des sciences morales et politiques (1838) and French Academy (1841).
The library of the seminary of St-Sulpice preserves a copy of La Démocratie annotated by Mgr Brute, first bishop of Vincennes, who registered in the margin a number of exceptions to Tocqueville's assertions. These notes have been transcribed by Mgr Baunard. Tocqueville held that democracy could exist only by seeking a moral support in religion, and that religion could only prosper by accommodating itself to democracy, but he is inclined to regard as too severe the doctrinal, disciplinary and liturgical exactions of Catholicism, and in Mgr Baunard's opinions his work leaves the impression he was only half Catholic.

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859)
Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) was a French historian and political theorist whose studies of American democracy and the French Revolution were among the most influential books of 19th century social science. Democracy in America, his most famous work, was written during his visit to the United States and published in 1835. De Tocqueville became a member of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques in 1838 and the Académie Française in 1841. In 1839 he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, and was foreign minister in the French cabinet of 1849. He was arrested and imprisoned after protesting the seizure of power by Louis Napoléon in 1851, and after his release he returned to private life and wrote The Old Regime and the Revolution, which was published in 1856.
