The Other Religion

The Yezidi religion is one of the most unusual religions on earth. It has survived despite its status as an unrecognized religion under Islamic rule, and through many onslaughts against it's Kurdish followers.

An Introduction to Chinese musical instruments
String instruments
Guqin, pipa, zheng, Konghou, erhu, yueqin, yangqin, Liuqin, Ruan, Sanxian ...
I. The Plucked String Instruments
  • The Lute family
    • Pipa - four-stringed lute with 30 fretts and pear-shaped body.
    • Liuqin - a smaller version of pipa with four strings, which sound similar to mandolin.
    • Sanxian - A long necked lute with three strings without fretts. In Chinese, "san" and "xian" stands for " "three" and "strings", respectively. The sound-body is made of round wooden box covered with snake skin, just like erhu. A piece of plectrum is used to play the instrument. This instrument is most popular in the north.
    • Ruan - very ancient Four-stringed lute with streight neck and various number of fretts. This instrument is used to be called "p'i-p'a" (pipa). Since the introduction of the oud-like lute through the "silk-road" in early Tang Dynasty, the pipa gratually became the present form, and the old form of pipa with streight-neck and round body got the name "Ruan", after a virtuoso player of this instrument. The Ruan is now mostly used for Peking opera. There are "Da Ruan", (large Ruan) "Zhong Ruan" (middle Ruan) used in the same sense as viola and cello.
    • Yueqin - moon-shaped lute with four strings, played with a spectrum, used for accompaning local operas. "Yue" stands for "the moon" in Chinese.

    Bryan C. Stout, Blacksmith

Bryan Stout began learning the blacksmith's trade while working at Mystic Seaport Museum. Having been raised around a Marine Machine Shop and Shipwrights in Mystic, he was well acquainted with old-time trades. His first anvil was given to him by his great grandfather. In 1989 he left the Seaport to become the resident blacksmith for Shelburne Museum and Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vermont. It was there he made the acquaintance of Henry Palmer, one of the last working mechanic-blacksmiths from Cornwall, Vermont. Henry had learned his trade from his father, a blacksmith in the Barre Granite Quarries. During the early 1990's Bryan was the resident artist/blacksmith in the Old Blacksmith Shop in Grafton, Vermont. During the winter months he travelled to Gary, Indiana to continue his training under the tutelage of Clifton Ralph, a well known industrial blacksmith, with 40 years of experience in the Gary Steel Mills.

W hat we eat where it comes from, how it is raised, processed, cooked affects our health in many ways. Traditional native diets in those few places in the world where people still mostly eat what they raise, hunt, gather, fish have been found to promote health and long life, for reasons only gradually coming to be understood. I t isn't practical to recommend now for most of us that we eat buffalo, harvest wild rice, farm corn in single hills, gather waupatoo or teepsinna. We'll see why those traditional foods are health-promoting as modern biological and medical sciences have belatedly learned. We'll see practical ways to improve health by food and diet starting when you are young to eat well to avoid health problems later. Cultural food stories and practical recipes are here too. InfoSeek Select Site for this Traditional Foods section. InfoSeek also selected First Nations, Canadian Native and Inuit as worth checking out. It's always nice to be appreciated. I really put in a lot of work on this section the recipes take quite a while to type and index-link. I have lots of fun with this food section. But I think it's appropriate to point out at the start of info for fun (good eating) and health that some Native people youth and elders especially are going to be affected to the point of malnutrition, hunger, and serious health problems due to the political direction the U.S. is taking. Here's a couple of brief statements from Native leaders about that. I hope you will take the time to read and think about them, if you are not Indian, but just interested in our culture or our foods and recipes. Indian people (U.S.) already know, and are worrying.

    72. Progressive Dispensationalism
In this Traditional dispensationalist's view, the most serious problem of progressive dispensationalism is the blurring of the distinction between Israel and the Church.
    http://www.faith.edu/pulpits/95_01.HTM
Progressive Dispensationalism: A Traditional Dispensational Critique
    by Myron J. Houghton, Ph.D., Th.D.
Faith Pulpit, January 1995 An explanation of Traditional Dispensationalism As understood by this author, the essence of dispensationalism is that Israel and the Church, as well as God's program for each, are clearly and consistently distinguished. The revelation concerning God's program for each is not dealing with ways of salvation but ways of managing one's life. The resultant features of dispensationalism understood in this way are these:
  • Salvation, in the mind of God, always has been based upon the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. He was the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (I Peter 1:20). Salvation always has been unmerited as Old Testament animal sacrifices clearly illustrate. And salvation always has been through faith in God's provision, although the content of a believer's faith was determined by the extent to which the gospel had been revealed, as Romans 4:1-2 and Genesis 15:5-6 testify. The Church which is Christ's Body did not begin until the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came to create this Body by Spirit baptism (I Cor. 12:13). The Church will be complete when Christ comes for Her (I Thess. 4:13-5:10). The Church which is Christ's Body will continue to exist throughout eternity as the Bride of Christ (Eph. 5:25-27), the dominant, though not the exclusive, inhabitant of the heavenly Jerusalem (Heb. 12:22-24; Rev. 19:6-8; 21:1-22:5).

Quite a different thing to the disciplined bouzouki music of the Greek mainland. Endless melodies, one after the other in complicated 7/8 or 9/8 time, sometimes monotonous and archaic, sometimes almost ecstatic. The oriental influence cannot be missed. The main role is taken by the lyra , the traditional three-stringed instrument made of mulberry wood, supported on the knee. It resembles a violin, but is played by grazing the strings with a fingernail and plays the main melody. A theme is repeated with an infinite number of varitations and embellishments. The

    Classic Wooden Model Boats
As owner of Traditional Lines, LTD, I create one of a kind renditions of classic and antique wooden watercraft. These wooden boat models are created one at a time from scratch... Never a Kit!!! Boat models start with the solid hull being sculpted from solid mahogany. They are then fashioned to reflect the original crafts wooden heritage and classic design. Commissioned wooden boat models are completed using your photos and other information combined with my extensive reference resources. My desire is to produce a piece you will be proud to display and to be enjoyed by your family now and by future generations. Finished pieces are approximately scaled to 1" per 1 foot. Thus, a 21 foot original boat will produce a 21 inch model. An appropriate display case results in an additional three to four inches in overall length. Traditional Lines, LTD
