THE NEW THOUGHT MOVEMENT: A LINK BETWEEN EAST AND WEST
Delivered at the Parliament of the World's Religions
Chicago, September 3, 1993 Alan Anderson
Curry College 1. Introduction In coming up with the title for this talk, "The New Thought Movement: A Link between East and West," I sought to emphasize the constructive joining of Eastern and Western thought. A better symbol than "link" might be "bridge." Eastern and Western gardens alike frequently feature bridges that allow one to pass from a near, familiar portion of the landscape to a more remote, perhaps less explored realm. So it is with the philosophical-religious movement known as New Thought. Although New Thought is of Western origin, it absorbed strong Eastern influences that continue to this day. Therefore, New Thought is well-suited as a bridge to assist the traveler in passing easily from one realm of thought to the other. Good neighbors might well join their respective gardens with a bridge allowing them to visit and return home. Both gain additional territory to explore without loss of their original holdings. This talk is not an exhaustive exploration of the relationship of New Thought and Eastern thought. It is, rather, a relatively brief taking note of some of these connections. It is largely historical; but, of greater significance, it is a step in an exploration of how New Thought and some aspects of Eastern thought might fit into a larger pattern of thinking, which might lead to a universal theology or philosophy.

Contrasting Strains
of Metaphysical Idealism
Contributing to New Thought

INTRODUCTION This writing is a preliminary survey of contrasting strains of metaphysical idealism contributing to New Thought. New Thought is a 19th and 20th Century philosophico-religious movement, which includes Divine Science, Religious Science, Unity, and numerous other groups and people unassociated with New Thought organizations, and in many cases members of traditional churches and/or other religious bodies. New Thought is dedicated to the practice of the presence of God, not only for its own sake, but for the attaining of health, wealth, and happiness. In pursuing these ends the followers of New Thought base their attitudes and actions on various forms of metaphysical idealism. "Metaphysical" of course refers to "metaphysics," the primary meaning of which, followed in this paper, is the branch of philosophy which is concerned with what basic nature anything must have in order to be at all. "Idealism" is the metaphysical position which maintains that all reality is spiritual or mental. It is not to be confused with "idealism" as high-mindedness, although the two meanings are compatible; ideals as well as ideas may be basic to reality. The chief opposing metaphysical position is materialism, or naturalism, the view that what is real is basically matter or lifeless energy.

Notes
The esoteric doctrine of Qabalah (sometimes Cabala, Kabbalah, or other spellings) serves as the principle source, or fountainhead, for the teachings of the majority of the other Western Mystery Schools, as they are usually generically referred to. Certainly it represents the source for the majority of the teachings of Rosicrucianism, Alchemy and the Esoteric Tarot, as well being a major contributor to Gnosticism. Qabalah is a living doctrine, developing as its ideas are re-interpreted by modern writers and devotees of ritual and esoterica. It does, however, have three principle source documents - The Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation), The Bible, and The Zohar, though none serve in a literal capacity. The ideas of Qabalah are always hidden behind a veil of symbolism, metaphor, and gematria and, even to this day, there is no little disagreement as to how they should be interpreted.
I have here used the word "Qabalah," as this was the spelling adopted by Dr Paul Foster Case (see note 4), whose teachings form the basis of my writings on esoterica.
See especially the Rig Veda and references to "soma."

Acknowledgments - I would like to thank Winfried Gerbracht for his knowledge of the chemistry and psychoactivity of the tryptamines. Winfried is seeking sponsorship for his research into the ibopyrines, a range of synthetic analogs of iboga alkaloids that offer potential for the low-cost treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. Anyone interested is asked to get in touch. I would like to apologize for the poor quality of some of the drawings.
Introduction
In this piece I would like to present some insights that seek to put across the idea that the early Christians may have relied on psychoactive plants to induce the visionary experiences that allowed them to create The Bible. But that they also appreciated Having been interested for some time in both biblical mysticism and psychoactive drugs, I have often been intrigued by the similarity between the molecular structure of the indole alkaloids, with their hexagonal and pentagonal rings, and the significance placed on the number "65" in the Qabalistic interpretation of The Bible and related esoteric documents. In this piece I will looking at an esoteric interpretation of the Old and New Testaments, taken, principally, from Qabalah - the doctrine that is the principle source for the majority of the Western esoteric schools of thought.
