TAMMANY HALL
Popular name for a Democratic Party organization in New York City. It was founded on May 12, 1789, as an organization of middle class residents determined to oppose the political influence of upper class residents who were members of the Society of the Cincinnati. Tammany was named after a legendary Delaware Indian Chief, and it supported Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson for the presidency in their bids for office. For the next fifty years, Tammany wielded great power in New York politics and practically controlled the city's Democratic Party. After 1868, when William Marcy Tweed was elected its grand sachem (or chief) Tammany's corrupt control of city government was fully exposed. The political machine had bilked tens of millions of dollars from the city. Tweed was imprisoned in 1871. From 1881 until the 1930s, Tammany ran New York City politics. Thereafter, although still a force in the city to this day, the Tammany machine is but a shadow of its former self.

Historians, U.S., Biographies Turner, Frederick Jackson Related Category: Historians, U.S., Biographies Turner, Frederick Jackson, The Character and Influence of the Indian Trade in Wisconsin (1891; an enlargement of his master's essay), showed the trend of his interest. In 1893, at the meeting of the American Historical Association in Chicago, he delivered an address, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," which outlined brilliantly the history of the receding frontier and its effect in creating American democracy. Little noticed at the time, it was to prove epoch-making in American history writing. It supplied a large part of a generation of historians with a theme to investigate. Turner's ideas are now generally incorporated in some form in most American history texts; although a historical controversy has raged for decades over the validity of his frontier thesis, few critics reject it entirely. The address and various short papers were reprinted in The Frontier in American History (1920). He collaborated with Edward Channing and Albert Bushnell Hart in the revision of
