About Mark Twain (1835-1910) Christened as Samuel Langhorne Clemens, Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835 in the small river town of Florida, Missouri, just 200 miles away from Indian Territory. The sixth child of John Marshall Clemens and Jane Lampton, Twain grew up amid small-town life in Florida until the age of four, when his family relocated to Hannibal in hopes of an improved living situation. Twain, by lineage, was a Southerner with both his parents' families originating in Virginia. But the slaveholding community of Hannibal provided a mix between rugged frontier life and the Southern tradition, a lifestyle that influenced Twain's later writings including the Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Few black slaves actually resided in Hannibal; in no way could the small farms on the delta be compared to the normal Southern plantation. Typically, blacks were mostly held as household servants, but they were still under the obligations of slavery. Growing up in the unusual rivertown of 2000 inhabitants, Twain was a mischievous boy, the prototype of his own character, Tom Sawyer. Though he was plagued by poor health at an early age, by the age of nine he learned to smoke and headed a small band of pranksters, and most of all, he detested school.

    Shane Hamilton, Web Editor Twain, Mark (Samuel Clemens) Writer (1835-1910) Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Samuel Clemens had passed through several careers by his thirtieth birthday: journeyman printer, riverboat pilot, silver prospector, newspaper reporter. In his first newspaper job, at the Virginia City (Nevada) Enterprise , he adopted his famous pen name, Mark Twain. In 1865, he gained overnight fame with the short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." published in The Saturday Press and widely reprinted. He continued to travel widely over the next few years, giving lectures (a major source of income and fame throughout his life) and filing correspondent reports for various newspapers. In 1869, he drew on his European sojourn for Innocents Abroad , a travel narrative which satirized both local cultures and American tourists.
    Samuel Longhorne Clemens (1835-1910) In 1871, Twain settled in Hartford, Connecticut, where he produced a series of well-known books over the next four decades. His distinctive writing style blended folk humor, barbed satire, and an unparalleled grasp of American idioms. Several works revisitedand embellishedhis past experiences: Roughing It (1872), his prospecting trip out west;

    Social and political satire Setting
    England, 1547 Principal Characters
    Edward Tudor-young Prince of Wales
    Tom Canty-a pauper boy
    Miles Hendon-a kindhearted noblemen Story Overview A boy was born on an autumm afternoon to a poverty-stricken Canty family. With the state of London's sixteenth-century economy staring them in the face, the family did not want the child. On the same day another English lad was born into the rich and royal Tudor family. These parents savored their baby - infact all of England had longed, hoped and prayed for this son. Now that he had arrived the, British subjects were overjoyed; young Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales was revered by all - in stark contrast to Tom Cantry's birth, of which no one took note excepting his family, who was only troubled by his arrival. Tom Cantry grew up in Offal Court. He lived a wrentched life, and indeed, knew no other. Every morning Tom was sent off to beg. If he came home emty-handed, his father and his grandmother would soundly beat him. So, often, when the afternoon rolled around and the boy reckoned that he had begged enough to avoid a beating, he would race to Father Andrew's monestary for the remainder of the day. Over the months, good Father taught Tom how to read, gave him some intruction in Latin, and recited wondrous tales of royalty. And because of his education, intelligence and grace, Tom seemed far wiser than others his age. Peoplke would frequently come seeking his advice, despite his low station.
