    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/T/Tyndall/1.html
    Tyndall, John
Irish physicist who 1869 studied the scattering of light by invisibly small suspended particles in colloids. Known as the Tyndall effect, it was first observed with colloidal solutions, in which a beam of light is made visible when it is scattered by minute colloidal particles (whereas a pure solvent does not scatter light). Similar scattering of blue wavelengths of sunlight by particles in the atmosphere makes the sky look blue (beyond the atmosphere, the sky is black).
Tyndall was born in County Carlow and studied at Marburg, Germany. He became professor at the Royal Institution 1853 and was also professor at the Royal School of Mines 1859-68. As superintendent of the Royal Institution from 1867, he did much to popularize science in Britain and also in the USA, where he toured from 1872 to 1873.
Having established that there are dust particles suspended in the air, Tyndall was able to show that the air contains living microorganisms. This confirmed the work of French chemist Louis Pasteur that rejected the spontaneous generation of life, and it also inspired Tyndall to develop methods of sterilizing by heat treatment.
Tyndall also carried out experimental work on the absorption and transmission of heat by gases, especially water vapour and atmospheric gases, which was important in the development of meteorology.

John Tyndall is best remembered as the first person to be able to explain to his children, 'Why is the sky blue?'. However, behind this apparently simple question are the fundamentals of the interation of electromagnetic radiation in liquids and gases. This is known as the science of nephelometry, of which John Tyndall was the founding father. It is the basis of spectrometers, flourimeters and turbimeters. The institute is still under construction but please read this biography of the famous Irish scientist. Click here

'... In one respect I think it must do good. It will probably put a hook in the nose of the antivivisectionist, and prevent our ignorant rulers from yielding to this agitation. Owen blew a very loud trumpet note at Folkestone. Altogether as regards medicine this has been a memorable year. ...'

Book-borne ghosts who talk in us : John Tyndall's ways of talking and their residue today

    University of Leicester
In Paradigm for December 1997 John Issitt raised questions about how we write our analyses of past books - especially as we try to locate them as cultural objects in particular cultural settings. In teacher education I am interested in the relationship between those old settings and our context of work in schools today and for that I find that the most helpful analytical stance is to think about the systems of discourse, the ways of talking, which were being established in those days. It is in that spirit I have particularly enjoyed handling some of the books of John Tyndall (1820-1893) and thinking about the qualities of the discourse he helped to establish. I think about his setting, and how it connects with but differs from the settings which I know. He was successor to Faraday at the Royal Institution, giving highly popular evening expositions and much involved in the politics of the professionalisation of science. The generations of teachers I have in mind have been in a the very different situation, picking up assumptions about science and about what it means to teach it. For some of them, at the time when science was being introduced into the public schools, Tyndall's lectures in book form were an inspiration and lecture demonstration became a regular component of school science. Later, even at second and third hand, the approach offered a paradigm in the sense of an exemplar showing how one's craft is done.
