One of the most disastrous bombing attack against allied ships during the entire war took place at Bari, Italy, on December 2, 1943. This port was in the British theater of operations, but several American [merchant] ships with [U.S. Navy] Armed Guards aboard were at Bari on that fateful day [when a German air raid occurred]. When the last bomb had fallen, and the last ship exploded, and the large fires had run their course, 17 ships had been sunk and six damaged. There were five United States ships sunk and one damaged. One other United States ship came through unscathed.
The Joseph Wheeler had her starboard side blown out and was on her port side when her Armed Guard officer, who had been ashore arranging for the pay of his men, last saw her. The only Armed Guard survivors were the officer and twelve men who were taking a well-earned liberty in the town. There were 15 Armed Guards dead or missing and 26 of the merchant crew missing.

ISRAELI - ARAB CONFLICTS
CTRL-F TO SEARCH or SCROLL BAR TO BROWSE The 1948-49 war reflected the opposition of the Arab states to the formation of a Jewish state in what they considered Arab territories. Newly created Israel was invaded by forces from Egypt, Syria, Transjordan (later Jordan), Lebanon, and Iraq. A UN-sponsored truce was arranged, but fighting has broken out periodically since then over the basic issue of the existence of Israel. In 1956 Israel, joined by France and Great Britain, attacked Egypt after that country had nationalized the Suez Canal. Intervention by the UN, supported by the United States and the Soviet Union, forced a cease-fire In 1967, in the Six-Day War, Israel responded to Egyptian provocation with air attacks and ground victories. The result was a humiliating defeat for Egypt In the Yom Kippur War of 1973-74, Egypt, Syria, and Iraq attacked Israel on the Jewish holy Day of Atonement, catching the Israelis off guard. Israel recouped quickly and forced the Arab troops back from their initial gains, but at great cost to both sides. Again, a cease-fire stopped the fighting, but Egypt and Israel later signed the Camp David Accords. In 1978 Palestinian guerrillas, from their base in LEBANON, launched an air raid on Israel; in retaliation, Israel sent troops into S Lebanon to occupy a strip 4–6 mi (6–10 km) deep and thus protect Israel's border. Eventually a UN peace-keeping force was set up there, but occasional fighting continued. In 1982 Israel launched a massive attack to destroy all military bases of the Palestine Liberation Organization in South Lebanon and, after a 10-week siege of the Muslim sector of West Beirut, a PLO stronghold, forced the Palestinians to accept a U.S.-sponsored plan whereby the PLO guerrillas would evacuate Beirut and go to several Arab countries that had agreed to accept them. Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 1985 but continues to maintain a Lebanese-Christian policed buffer zone north of its border.

Excerpt: Admiral Blair Says China Could Hurt But Not Hold Taiwan
(Testimony to Senate Armed Services Committee) While Beijing could cause "significant damage" to Taipei in a military confrontation, its armed forces would not be able to hold Taiwan, according to Admiral Dennis Blair, Commander-in-Chief U.S. Pacific Command. In testimony March 27 before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Blair said that despite efforts by Beijing to upgrade its military forces, changes in the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and Taiwan's military forces "have not significantly altered the balance of power across the Taiwan Strait." Taiwan's military maintains "a qualitative edge" over the PLA, Blair told the senators, so the PLA "still lacks the capability to invade and hold Taiwan." On the other hand, Blair said, China maintains "a quantitative edge in all branches of service, but does not have adequate power projection to quickly overcome Taiwan's more modern air force and inherent geographical advantages, which favor defense." The communist regime's military forces do have the ability "to inflict significant damage to Taiwan," he cautioned.
