Game stuff now available on the Cutting Room Floor , a section of my website containing rejected or orphaned work of mine. Yes, I finally updated my web page. It's only been roughly five months since I last touched this site. Perhaps you are wondering, "Mearls, what could possibly be so important that you couldn't take the time to post more d20 material on this site for us to enjoy?" Well, as it turns out my professional life has been pretty busy lately. GenCon was a complete blast, though walking into it expecting a relaxing vaction proved to be naivete of the first order. I finally feel like a real, bona fide game designer now that I've hobnobbed with publishers, editors, and finally talked about jen-u-wine Super Secret Stuff I Can't Talk About (TM). I'm booked very heavily over the next year, which is a tremendous relief given the vagaries of doing anything on a freelance basis. And today, while I'm far from money-obsessed (though I am more mindful of cash now that I write for a living rather than code) I am definitely a workaholic. My college friends, oh, but if they could see me now! I've broken up with women because I wanted to spend more time writing on the weekends than dealing with a relationship. There are times I think the chemicals that are supposed to drive me to impregnate someone were swapped out with something that compels me to write, write, and write some more.

Final Chorus
Live New Releases News ... Basin Street Records 5th Anniversary Party Phillip Johnston's Transparent Quartet
Culbreth Theatre, The Virginia Film Festival
Charlottesville, Va. - Oct. 27, 2001 By Aaron Steinberg

For the second time in three years, Phillip Johnston and his Transparent Quartet swung through Charlottesville for a Virginia Film Festival performance. In '99, Johnston and his Quartet performed music for films by the French director Georges Méliès. This year, Johnston revisited the first original score he wrote for silent film: music for Tod Browning's 1927 silent, The Unknown . (Johnston recorded the score with his band Big Trouble in 1993 for Avant.) This year, the festival chose masquerades as its theme, and the dark fable of a film paired with Johnston's schizophrenic score could not have been a better fit. The film recounts the exploits of Alonzo (Lon Chaney), a lovestruck, conniving and thoroughly unlikable knife thrower who may or may not have arms. This tale of circus performer love and missing limbs traces the knife thrower's attempts at winning the heart of Nonan (young Joan Crawford), a woman who suffers a pathological fear of arms and the advances of her second suitor, the hug-happy strongman Malabar. The film builds into a wild, spectacular climax, involving in no particular order: conveyor belts, bull whips, out-of-control horses and a potential public de-limbing of one of the main characters.

Rummie's ducks and dodges
You'll note, if you're careful, a certain ambiguity in what Donald Rumsfeld actually said this past weekend ( quoted in the New York Times ) about troop deployments in Iraq: This has been planned, that was what his plan was. I haven't signed a new deployment order in days. These are deployments that were, people were alerted months ago, they brought on active duty, they were trained, they have been loading their ships, they've been sending the ships over there, they've been loading themselves into airplanes and flying over there, and it's a steady stream of people. But the truth comes out , somewhat less ambiguously, in the Washington Post today: The Pentagon has reacted to unexpectedly stiff Iraqi resistance by boosting U.S. forces in Iraq ahead of their scheduled deployment dates, a defense official said. Thanks, Rummie, you're a big help. April 1, 2003, 1:33 PM ET. TB/Comments? (1)
The fog of politics
"The only way out now is back, and to hope for some kind of a miracle." That's what Seymour Hersh reports (in the New Yorker , of course) a former intelligence officer told him about the situation coalition forces now face in Iraq, given his assessment of the amount of troops and materiel now on the ground.

Teleporting An Unknown State Exhibition History A Web version of this work was commissioned by the cultural center Kibla, in Maribor, Slovenia, in 1998. It was presented simultaneously at Kibla and on the Internet from October 24 to November 7, 1998. A new web version travelled in 2001 as part of the exhibition "Telematic Connections: The Virtual Embrace", organized and circulated by Independent Curators International (ICI), New York, and curated by Steve Dietz.

"Teleporting an Unknown State" is a biotelematic interactive installation. In other words: it is a computer-based telecommunications piece in which a biological process is an integral part of the work. The installation creates the experience of the Internet as a life-supporting system. In a very dark room a pedestal with earth serves as a nursery for a single seed. Through a video projector suspended above and facing the pedestal, remote individuals send light via the Internet to enable this seed to photosynthesize and grow in total darkness. ( Diagram
Photo: Gumparnat Pasaganon The installation takes the idea of teleportation of particles (and not of matter) out of its scientific context and transposes it to the domain of social interaction enabled by the Internet. Following my previous work with telematic interactive installation and my exploration of non-semiological forms of communication with electronic media, this installation uses the remote transmission of video images not for their representational content but for their optical phenomenon as wavefronts of light. Internet videoconferencing is used to teleport light particles from several countries with the sole purpose of enabling biological (and not artificial) life and growth in the installation site.

Sign My Guestbook View My Guestbook I would like to point out that anyone adding to or viewing our guestbook should use great discretion when doing so. We have recieved great criticism for many things we do, including a great deal of undo criticism because of a "falling out" we had with a certain paranormal group we were once affiliated with. It seems they have plenty of friends who enjoy trying to bring us down. In regard to anyone trying to contact us through email, we have had some problems with email routing, but it is completely functional now. We are sorry for any inconvenience it may have caused.
Our goal is to gather and collect data that will lead to a better understanding of the spirit world. While doing so, we can and will help our clients understand their own personal experiences of paranormal activity. As a result, we hope to help create a livable resolution for both the client and the spirit. If such a resolution can not be absolved, we have the knowledge and means to rid the clients home of the spirit or demon. We are open minded to all theories and methods, as this is not yet an exact science. Ultimately, our goal is to bring Paranormal Research to a recognized science. WE DO NOT ALLOW THE DESECRATION OF BURIAL GROUND IN OUR TEAM, OR RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE ELSE DOES EITHER.

Alma, tell us All modern women are jealous Which of your magical wands Got you Gustav and Walter and Franz
The first one she married was Mahler Whose buddies all knew him as Gustav And each time he saw her he'd holler "Ach, that is the fräulein I moost hav"
Their marriage, however, was murder He'd scream to the heavens above "I'm writing ' Das Lied von der Erde' And she only wants to make love!" Alma, tell us All modern women are jealous You should have a statue in bronze For bagging Gustav and Walter and Franz While married to Gus, she met Gropius

Tombs of the unknown workers
Discovery indicates craftsmen built pyramids
August 11, 1996
Web posted at: 3:30 p.m. EDT (1930 GMT) From Correspondent Gayle Young GIZA, Egypt (CNN) Egyptians are fast solving an age-old mystery: Who built the great pyramids of Giza, and how did they do it? Historians have speculated that slave labor dragged the heavy stone blocks into place to fashion the gigantic structures. Still others have suggested the builders were aliens from outer space. But six years ago, a tourist literally stumbled onto a major clue when her horse slipped on a buried structure south of the Giza plateau. Archeologists investigated, uncovering the tombs of the workers who built the pyramids and they were neither slaves nor aliens. "People like mystery they don't like facts," says pyramids director Zahi Hawass . "Be we have the facts here." Hawass calls the discovery the "most important," and said the discovery shows that the laborers who constructed the pyramids were, in fact, Egyptians. The evidence suggests that about 15,000 skilled craftsmen were responsible for the massive construction project. They used blocks of stone from a nearby quarry, moving the stones on sledges up ramps that spiraled around the pyramids.
