Carbon Sequestration
Carbon Sequestration
Fossil fuels will remain the mainstay of energy production well into the 21st century. Availability of these fuels to provide clean, affordable energy is essential for the prosperity and security of the United States. However, increased concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) due to carbon emissions are expected unless energy systems reduce the carbon emissions to the atmosphere. Global Sequestration Capacity
To stabilize and ultimately reduce concentrations of this greenhouse gas, it will be necessary to employ carbon sequestration - carbon capture, separation and storage or reuse. Carbon sequestration, along with reduced carbon content of fuels and improved efficiency of energy production and use, must play major roles if the nation is to enjoy the economic and energy security benefits, which fossil fuels brings to the energy mix. The President’s Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) underscored the importance of carbon sequestration in its report "Federal Energy Research and Development for the Challenges of the Twenty First Century." PCAST recommended increasing the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) R&D for carbon sequestration. The report stated: "A much larger science-based CO2 sequestration program should be developed. The aim should be to provide a science-based assessment of the prospects and costs of CO2 sequestration. This is very high-risk, long-term R&D that will not be undertaken by industry alone without strong incentives or regulations, although industry experience and capabilities will be very useful."

    Human Genome Research
An Introduction The U.S. Human Genome Project (HGP), composed of the DOE and NIH Human Genome Programs, is the national coordinated effort to characterize all human genetic material by determining the complete sequence of the DNA in the human genome. The HGP's ultimate goal has been to discover all the more than 30,000 human genes and render them accessible for further biological study. To facilitate the future interpretation of human gene function, parallel studies have been carried out on selected model organisms. View timeline and history for background information on the project. The HGP will meet an ambitious schedule to complete the full sequence in 2003, two years ahead of previous projections. Technology available shortly after the start of the HGP in 1990 could have been used to attain HGP objectives, but the cost and time required would have been unacceptable. Because of this, a major emphasis of the project's early years was to optimize existing methods and develop new technologies to increase DNA mapping and sequencing efficiency by 10- to 20-fold. The genome was sequenced with technologies and methods that evolved over the past 10 years. In the course of completing the sequence, an interim "working draft" of the human sequence was produced and published in

Green Buildings Introduction Also visit U.S. DOE's Building Technologies Program. The design, construction, and maintenance of buildings has a tremendous impact on our environment and our natural resources. There are more than 76 million residential buildings and nearly 5 million commercial buildings in the U.S. today. These buildings together use one-third of all the energy consumed in the U.S., and two-thirds of all electricity. By the year 2010, another 38 million buildings are expected to be constructed. The challenge will be to build them smart, so they use a minimum of nonrenewable energy, produce a minimum of pollution, and cost a minimum of energy dollars, while increasing the comfort, health, and safety of the people who live and work in them. Traditional building practices often overlook the interrelationships between a building, its components, its surroundings, and its occupants. "Typical" buildings consume more of our resources than necessary, negatively impact the environment, and generate a large amount of waste. According to Laurence Doxsey, former Coordinator of the City of Austin Green Builder Program, "a standard wood-framed home consumes over one acre of forest and the waste created during construction averages from 3 to 7 tons." Often, these buildings are costly to operate in terms of energy and water consumption. And they can result in poor indoor air quality, which can lead to health problems.
