The Manhattan Project
In 1939, the Nazis were rumored to be developing an atomic bomb. The United States initiated its own program under the Army Corps of Engineers in June 1942. America needed to build an atomic weapon before Germany or Japan did. General Leslie R. Groves, Deputy Chief of Construction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was appointed to direct this top-secret project.

Fat Man, left, and Little Boy stirred Japanese emotions
An American museum has stopped selling earrings in the shape of the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The director of the National Atomic Museum in New Mexico said the decision had been made because of sensitivity around the current anniversaries of the attacks. Anti-nuclear activists in Japan were outraged when they saw the miniature replicas advertised on the museum's Internet site. The museum said the earrings sold out on Friday and it had no plans to restock them. Ceremonies were held in Hiroshima on Friday to mark the 54th anniversary of the attack, which killed some 140,000 people out of an estimated population of 350,000. A larger bomb dropped on Nagasaki three days later effectively sealed Japanese surrender and ended World War II. Internet sales The US National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque had sold the "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" earrings, named after the bombs dropped on the two cities, at $20 for a pair of one of each. Thousands of people marked the anniversary In the "Museum Exclusives" section of its Website, it boasted: "Where else will you find a pair of Fat Man and Little Boy earrings?"

Atoms for Peace

The genius of Erik Nitsche encompasses virtually the entire sphere of visual communications. Nitsche's prodigious and globetrotting career spans nearly 60 years. Nitsche's historic relationship with General Dynamics began in 1953 with the design of a series of three sets of posters dedicated to public perceptions of nuclear energy. "Atoms for Peace" contains portions of several lithographic public relations oriented fine art print programs created for the General Dynamics Corp. in the 1950's and 1960's. The prints depict Nitsche's interpretations of nuclear energy uses, modern technologies for the era, and feature posters created for promotion of nuclear energy in foreign countries, which are imprinted in the languages of those regions. EXHIBITION LOGISTICS:
Exhibition elements: The "Atoms for Peace" exhibition consists of 15 30" X 55" framed artists posters and one framed unit with interpretive text and exhibit title.

National Atomic Museum Moves to Old Town
(February 21, 2002) Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez announced on February 13 that the National Atomic Museum would be moving from Kirtland Air Force Base to a property in the Old Town area at 1905 Mountain Road NW, as a temporary exhibition site. In an effort that was lead by Mayor Chavez , the former REI location, owned by American Properties, was made available and leased to the museum as another way to encourage tourist traffic in the Old Town corridor. "This museum is a part of New Mexico history," Mayor Chavez said. "This is America's only official museum resource for the history and science of atomic energy and I encouraged the relocation to make this heritage more accessible to the general public". The National Atomic Museum owned by the Department of Energy and operated by Sandia National Laboratories, has been closed to the general public since the September terrorist attacks. The museum plans to be open at the new location in time for the upcoming tourist season in early May. The museum was first opened in 1969 and chartered by Congress in 1991. Jim Long, President of American Properties, said that he was interested in working with Sandia National Laboratories and the National Atomic Museum Foundation to use the old REI building as a way to promote the culture and heritage of the State of New Mexico and feels that, with the addition of the National Atomic Museum, we will have created the strongest museum corridor in the state.

Operated by the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Atomic Museum contains a large collection of declassified nuclear technology. Since its opening in 1969, the objective of the National Atomic museum has been to provide a readily accessible repository of educational materials, and information on the Atomic Age. In addition, the museum's goal is to preserve, interpret, and exhibit to the public memorabilia of this Age. In late 1991 the museum was chartered by Congress as the United States' only official Atomic museum.
What You'll See
Prominently featured in the museum's high bay is the story of the Manhattan Engineer District, the unprecedented 2.2 billion dollar scientific-engineering project that was centered in New Mexico during World War II. The Manhattan Project as it was more commonly called, developed, built, and tested the world's first Atomic bomb in New Mexico. This display also includes casings similar to the only Atomic bombs ever used in warfare. Dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, these two bombs helped bring World War II to an end in mid-August 1945. The story of the Manhattan Project's three secret cities , Hanford, Washington, Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is also presented in this area.

Nuclear Pioneers Event 2000 National Atomic Museum Albuquerque, NM
Minutes to Midnight; The Cuban Missile Crisis
October 11-12, 2000 The Third annual "Nuclear Pioneers" event focusing on the Cuban Missile Crisis. This year, the Museum's annual historical program series will examine this incredibly troubling time in world history. In the Fall of 1962, it is said that the world was never closer to nuclear war. During this Museum event specially selected individuals will share anecdotal accounts of their experiences during the days of the Missile Crisis. This annual event draws interest from national media, historians and film producers. The National Atomic Museum's large collection of nuclear weapons and weapon delivery systems includes those that were part of America's nuclear arsenal during the October 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
