Osbeck's 101 Hymn Stories #51 Hymn Title: Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Hymn Author: Henry van Dyke, 1852-1933 Hymn Tune: Hymn to Joy Hymn Music: Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770-1827 Hymn Meter: 87.87 Doubled Text: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, JOY.... Galatians 5:22 This hymn is generally considered by hymnologists to be one of the most joyous expressions of hymn lyrics in the English language. Its author, Henry van Dyke, was born at Germantown, Pennsylvania, on November 10, 1852. During his lifetime he was recognized as one of the ablest Presbyterian preachers and leading liturgy figures in this country. In addition to achieving fame as a preacher, he served as a professor of his denomination, became a Navy chaplain during World War I, and represented his country as an ambassador to Holland and Luxembourg under an appointment by President Wilson. He was a prolific writer of devotional material with many of his books being best sellers. This is the best-known of van Dyke's hymns. He stated his purpose in writing it as follows: These verses are simple expressions of common Christian feelings and desires in this present time, hymns of today that may be sung together by people who know the thought of the age, and are not afraid that any truth of science will destroy their religion or that any revolution on earth will overthrow the kingdom of heaven.

Henry Mills Alden, American writer and editor for 50 years of Harper's Magazine and descendent of John and Priscilla Alden of the Mayflower fame, was born in Mount Tabor, Vermont, on 3 November 1836. In 1853 he entered Williams College, where his fellow students included James A. Garfield, John J. Ingalls, and Horace E. Scudder. After attending Williams, Alden spent three years at Andover Theological Seminary. Though he never entered the ministry, he often served as preacher at neighborhood parishes. Alden's literary career began while he was in the seminary with the acceptance of two articles by the Atlantic Monthly . The articles, one of which was on the Eleusinian Mysteries, had been sent, unbeknownst to him, to the

The canal system of this country is being threatened by the spread of a new form of transportation known as 'railroads.' ... As you may well know, railroad carriages are pulled at the enormous speed of 15 miles per hour by engines, which, in addition to endangering life and limb of passengers, roar and snort their way through the countryside. The Almighty certainly never intended that people should travel at such breakneck speed.

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of Love; Hearts unfold like flow'rs before Thee, Hail Thee as the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness, Drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day! 2. All Thy works with joy surround Thee, Earth and heav'n reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flow'ry meadow, flashing sea, Chanting bird and flowing fountain Call us to rejoice with Thee. 3. Thou art giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest, Wellspring of the joy of living, Ocean depth of happy rest! Thou the Father, Christ out Brother All who live in love are Thine; Teach us how to love each other, Lift us to the joy divine. 4. Mortals, join the mighty chorus Which the morning stars began; Father love is reigning o'er us, Brotherlove binds man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, Victors in the midst of strife; Joyful music lifts us sunward In the triumph song of life.

Larry Marietta's Music Notes from Sunday Morning Services at FCCB
Sunday, November 9, 1997 THIS MORNING'S MUSIC While he was a guest preacher at Williams College in 1907, Henry van Dyke (1852-1933) penned the text for "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee." His son, Tertius, relates the story that his father "came down to breakfast one morning and placed the manuscript on the table before houseguest President James Garfield, saying: 'Here is a hymn for you. Your mountains (the Berkshires) were my inspiration. It must be sung to the music of Beethoven's Hymn to Joy .' " Of his text, Henry van Dyke writes: "These verses are simple expressions of common Christian feelings and desires in this present time, hymns of today that may be sung together by people who know the thought of the age, and are not afraid that any truth of science will destroy religion, or any revolution on earth overthrow the kingdom of heaven. Therefore this is a hymn of trust and joy and hope." The adaptation of Beethoven's famous melody from his Ninth Symphony for use as a hymntune was by Edward Hodges (1796-1867) of Bristol, England. Hodges emigrated to Canada and then to New York City, where he served as organist for St. John's Episcopal Church and Trinity Church, Wall Street. The text for "God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending" was written by Robert Lansing Edwards (b. 1915) for the Hymn Society of America's 1961 competition for stewardship hymns. It was one of ten winners and subsequently published in
