Vigny, Alfred de (1797-1863), poète, romancier et auteur dramatique français. Alfred de Vigny naquit à Loches en Touraine le 27 mars 1797, dans une famille de noblesse ancienne. La tourmente révolutionnaire passée, les Vigny s'installèrent à Paris. À la chute de l'Empire en 1814, Alfred de Vigny entra avec le grade de sous-lieutenant dans les Compagnies rouges ou Gendarmes du roi. C'est à ce titre qu'il accompagna Louis XVIII à Gand lors des Cent-Jours. De 1817 à 1822, il connut donc la vie de garnison, qu'il trouva assez morne, mais il fit aussi ses débuts littéraires en collaborant aux premières revues du romantisme naissant, le Conservateur littéraire et la Muse française. Il y publia surtout les quelques poèmes réunis en recueil sous le titre Poèmes antiques et modernes en 1826. Ces pièces sont organisées dans le recueil en différentes sections thématiques : poèmes mystiques (parmi lesquels Moïse ), poèmes antiques (parmi lesquels la Fille de Jephté ) et poèmes modernes (parmi lesquels Dolorida ). One of the foremost romantics, Vigny expressed a philosophy of stoical pessimism, stressing the lonely struggle of the individual in a hostile universe. Though physically weak, he was sent to military school and became an officer in 1814, resigning in 1827. His best-known poems are found in (1864). His prose works include the novels Cinq-Mars (1826, tr. The Spider and the Fly, Stello Servitude et grandeur militaires (1835, tr. The Military Necessity, 1953), and Chatterton (1835, tr. 1908), a play. A selection of his own notes comprises (1867). Unlike other romantics of his period, he did not emphasize personal emotion; instead he presented his ideas through general symbols with dramatic force. His reputation, temporarily dimmed by that of Hugo and Lamartine, was revived by the time of Baudelaire. See studies by J. Doolittle (1967) and A. Whitridge (1933, repr. 1971). Sept. 17, 1863, Paris Poet, dramatist, and novelist who was the most philosophical of the French Romantic writers. Youth and Romantic works. Vigny was born into an aristocratic family that had been reduced to modest circumstances by the French Revolution. His father, a 60 year old retired soldier at the time of his son's birth, was a veteran of the Seven Years' War; and his maternal grandfather, the Marquis de Baraudin, had served as commodore in the royal navy. Vigny grew up in Paris and took preparatory studies for the École Polytechnique at the Lycée Bonaparte, where he conceived an "inordinate love for the glory of bearing arms," a passion common to the young men of his generation. Attached to the monarchy by family tradition, he became a second lieutenant in the king's guard when the Bourbons returned to power in 1814 and when he was only 17 years old. Though he was promoted to first lieutenant in 1822 and to captain the following year, the military profession, limited to garrison duty rather than pursued on the battlefield, bored the young officer, who preferred the adventures of a literary career. After several leaves of absence, he abandoned military life in 1827. In the meantime, he had published his first poem, "Le Bal," in 1820.
