Voltaire Francois Marie Arouet (pen name Voltaire ) was born on November 21, 1694 in Paris. Voltaire's intelligence, wit and style made him one of France's greatest writers and philosophers. Young Francois Marie received his education at "Louis-le-Grand," a Jesuit college in Paris. He left school at 16 and soon made friends among the Parisian aristocrats. His humorous verses made him a favorite in society circles. In 1717, his sharp wit got him into trouble with the authorities. He was imprisoned in the Bastille for eleven months for writing a scathing satire of the French government. During his time in prison Francois Marie wrote "Oedipe" which was to become his first theatrical success and adopted his pen name "Voltaire." In 1726, Voltaire insulted the powerful young nobleman, "Chevalier De Rohan," and was given two options: imprisonment or exile. He chose exile and from 1726 to 1729 lived in England. While in England Voltaire was attracted to the philosophy of John Locke and ideas of mathematician and scientist, Sir Isaac Newton . He studied England's Constitutional Monarchy and its religious tolerance. Voltaire was particularly interested in the philosophical rationalism of the time, and in the study of the natural sciences. After returning to Paris he wrote a book praising English customs and institutions. It was interpreted as criticism of the French government and in 1734, Voltaire was forced to leave Paris again.

Cunegonde, the beautiful daughter of a baron Cacambo, Candide's servant and companion Martin, a later traveling companion Story Overveiw Candide, the illegitimate son of a Baron's sister, was sent to live with the Baron at his beautiful castle in Westphalia. The Baroness weighed about three hundred and fifty pounds, as therefore greatly respected, and did the honors of the house it had digniy which rendered her still more respect. Her daughter Cunegonde, aged seventeen, was rosy-checked, fresh, plump and tempting. The Baron's son appeared in every respect worthy of his father. The tutor Pangloss was the oracle of the house, and little Candide followed his lessons with all the candor of his age and character. Pangloss, "the greatest philosopher of the province and therefore of the whole world," taught Candide that he lived in "the best of all possible worlds." His theory was that "since everything is made for an end, everything is necessarily for the best end." Observe that noses were made to wear spectacles; and so we have spectacles. Legs were visibly instituted to be breeched, and we have breeches ...

Kingwood College Library. Candide by Voltaire 1694 1778.
    http://www.nhmccd.edu/contracts/lrc/kc/voltaire3.htm
Kingwood College Library Candide by Voltaire CRITICISM] BIOGRAPHY] HISTORY INTERNET Candide is the story of the improbable travels and adventures of a young man, Candide, his fiancée Cunegonde and his tutor Pangloss. Voltaire was disillusioned and pessimistic over the death of his mistress, his alienation from Frederick the Great, and the horrible suffering of victims of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. Thus he wrote this exaggerated adventure to attack the optimistic philosophy of Leibnitz and Pope who believed that this was "the best of all possible worlds."
