Vermilion Historical Society Obituaries of the First 100 People Buried in Graceland/New Masonic Cemetery, Abbeville, Louisiana Compiled by Gary E. Theall. The establishment of the Graceland Cemetery was announced by the Meridional on June 27, 1908, as follows: "New Cemetery. "A few progressive people in Abbeville, believing that the day of the 'brierpatch graveyard' for the town, has passed have combined to establish a respectable cemetery for Abbeville and vicinity. They have secured four arpents of land, on Graceland Avenue in the North Eastern part of town, near the limits of the corporation. The ground selected is high and well located, on one of the widest and in future to be, one of the most beautiful streets of the town. The Avenue is sixty-six feet wide including the sidewalk. "The cemetery is to be laid off into large family lots, with wide walks between. It is contemplated to spend a considerable sum of money on the cemetery, at once in the planting of trees, shrubbery and flowers, as well as in laying off and shelling wide drive ways through the cemetery. Family lots to be of various sizes some 50 feet square, some 40 feet square, some 25 and 20 feet square and less. "Quite a number of families have spoken for lots already, and will remove their dead to the new cemetery, in time. Not much can be done before next winter. As this cemetery is located on Graceland Avenue, the name of 'Graceland Cemetery,' is suggested. When this project is further developed and the place is prepared for use, the public will be fully informed of terms and particulars."

He came from his home at #5 Township, Lincolnton, to Kings Mountain in 1881 when he was 15 years old. He was the 4 th Generation from Jacob Plonk, Jr., who was born in 1748 and died 1840. His wife was Christine Kiser Plonk who was born in 1755 and died in 1812. Jacob Plonk, Sr. and his brother, Peter (who married Elizabeth Kiser, sister to Christine) were immigrants from Holland and landed in Phil. Pa. on August 28, 1735, and went to Lancaster County. Jacob Plonk, Jr. and his wife Christine had six children, one of which was Joseph who was born in 1788 and died on July 1,1888. Joseph Plonk married Barbara Rudisell and they had 8 children - one of which was John Jonas Plonk who was born on March 8,1823 and died in July 1907. John Jonas Plonk married Ann Ellen Oates who was born on July 24, 1831, and died on May 14, 1905. They were married on August 17, 1847. They had 13 or 14 children (1,2,3,8 and 9 died in infancy. Hodge Index to the New Era The Fredericksburg New Era was published between 1865 and 1866 by Alexander Little. The newspaper represented a title change from the continuing publication of The Fredericksburg News, to which he returned to after this brief span. The Micro Photo division of Bell and Howell, Old Mansfield Road, Wooster, Ohio 44691 has preserved on one reel of microfilm titled 'NEW ERA (VA), May 23, 1865 September 18, 1882' a collection of scattered issues of two newspapers housed in the Archives of Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg, Va. The reel contains, in chronological order, most issues of THE NEW ERA from May 23, 1865 through May 22, 1866; scattered issues of THE FREDERICKSBURG NEWS from February 16,1874 through December 31, 1874; most issues from January through June, 1875; and representative issues from January, 1876 through September 18, 1882. The microfilm copy used for preparing this index was provided by the Central Rappahannock Regional Library, Caroline and Lewis Streets, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22401. The index was prepared by Robert Hodge. The four-page, six-column, twice-weekly papers were scanned for most names and events of interest to local historians and genealogists. Each entry consists of essentially four parts: Name, Reason for being, Publication date, and Page/Column numbers. The electronic version was created by the Center for Historic Preservation at Mary Washington College by scanning a copy of the text and then modifying the format to fit a table. Recent ferries have been carrying about 100 passengers and 25 cars at a time, and on Good Friday there were 142 passengers and 35 cars - so the island was full at last, with everyone in excellent form. The weekend weather was not brilliant, which came as a bit of a shock after months of almost unbroken sunshine, but at least it was dry. There was plenty going on Mary Machrins' family were at the heart of a belated Christmas Dinner (with all trimmings), which had had to be postponed beyond the usual date. Nigel and Rhona's house was chosen, and it was good to see the decorations and the party lights, and to hear of people trying to get a 22lb turkey into a 15lb oven at this time of year. The Shooting Match was well-supported, and as always some competitors had travelled far to attend. Reports are a little uncertain, but it seems that Nigel was the overall champion, closely challenged by Duncan Sandy in second place; Seamus McNeill covered himself with glory, winning the Double Rise, and Iain Harding made a very respectable contribution, being adjudged "Best Dressed Competitor". One enthusiastic competitor had trouble with the moving targets, but scored a direct hit on the loader's shed; whereupon Italy was rumoured to have surrendered. The full results are now to hand:
