Alfred Russel Wallace Alfred Russel Wallace was born in a small village of Usk, located in Wales. Shortly after Alfred finished school, his father passed away and he joined his brother surveying countries. He did this for about four years. Through this experience, he acquired his talent for observation and detailed recordings which helped immensely later on in his life. Alfred Wallace is best known for his theory of natural selection . From 1854 to 1862 he and his mentor Henry Walter Bates explored the Amazon River. It was during this expedition that he saw differences between the animals in Asia and the animals in Australia. From this observation he put a line between the Malay islands and Celebes which he called the Wallace’s Line. Out of this experience came his theory of natural selection. After he thought about this theory he wrote a manuscript called “On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely from the Original Type.” Instead of just sending his manuscript straight to the publishers, he first sent it to Charles Darwin . At this time Darwin saw so many similarities with his theory that he decided to publish his theory right away. To this day, Wallace’s greatest accomplishment was to get Charles Darwin to publish his own theory.

The 1960 publication, not the later doctored versions. This great British naturalist - the holder of the Order of Merit - originated the theory of natural selection, the survival of the fittest and the origin of species. Wallace and Darwin presented their joint paper at the Linnean Society on July 1st 1858. The sole reason why Wallace has been written out of our history books is because he dared to tell the truth. He agreed with the findings of Sir William Crookes FRS that no scientific paper can be complete without taking into account the forces of nature that are normally out of range of our five physical senses. Wallace, just the same as all the pioneers of subatomic physics, has the emotive label of "Spiritualist" tagged onto his name. This in spite of the fact that he made it very clear that his work had no connection with revealed religion. Spiritualism is an officially recognised one-god religion. Alfred Russel Wallace, Sir William Crookes, Sir Oliver Lodge, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle MD and many others have all been destroyed by the great lie that they were "dabbling in the religion of Spiritualism". Nothing could be further from the truth.

From his study of comparative biology in Brazil and in the East Indies, he evolved a concept of evolution similar to that of Charles Darwin . Like Darwin, he was greatly influenced by the writings of Malthus and Lyell and based his theories on careful observation. His special contribution to the evidence for evolution was in biogeography; he systematized the science and wrote The Geographical Distribution of Animals (2 vol., 1876) and a supplement, Island Life (1881). Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) "...every species comes into existence coincident in time and space with a preexisting closely allied species." Co-discoverer of the theory of natural selection and key player in the development of biogeography. A self-taught professional natural history collector who had spent years in South America and Asia, he began work on the species problem in the mid-1850's while in the field, publishing little-noticed papers that argued for the fact of evolution on the basis of geographical distributions. In 1858 he suddenly intuited the selection theory without realizing that Darwin already had done so, and ironically wrote to him for help in getting his ideas published. This resulted in the joint paper read before the Linnean Society and published that year. Throughout the rest of his life Wallace graciously gave as much credit as possible to Darwin, and the Darwin circle reciprocated by arranging a government pension and assorted honors for Wallace. Although he was less inclined to neo-Lamarckism than Darwin himself, he later argued that the theory did not apply to the evolution of man. Wallace noticed many plants and animals had special features enabling them survive the conditions which they lived. These observations led Wallace to develop a theory about how species of plants and animals gradually change through a process known as 'evolution' or "natural selection". Alfred Russel Wallace, a British naturalist, was born in Monmouthshire , England in 1823. In 1848 he made an expedition to the Amazon River with the British naturalist Henry Walter Bates . During his exploration on plants and animals of the Amazon, he distinguished that some animals had camouflage to help them hide from predators, and some birds had specially shaped bills to let them crack open nuts and extract nectar from plants. Some plants had clever defenses to help fight attacks by insects. These observations led Wallace to develop a theory about how species of plants and animals gradually change through a process known as evolution or “natural selection”. In 1848 he made an expedition to the Amazon River with the British naturalist Henry Walter Bates, and from 1854 to 1862 he conducted research in the islands of Malaysia. During the latter expedition he noted fundamental zoological differences between the animal species of Asia and those of Australia, and he placed the zoological dividing line-known as Wallace's Line-between the Malay islands of Borneo and Celebes. In the course of this research Wallace formulated his theory of natural selection; a striking coincidence was revealed in 1858 when he communicated his ideas to Darwin, whose own similar theory of evolution was then in manuscript. The outcome of Wallace's ruminations was that he went on to propound a theory of the evolutionary origin of species by natural selection.   It was a memoir sent to by Wallace to the influential expert naturalist Charles Darwin in 1858 that prompted Darwin to make public his own theorisings about the evolution of species.   Darwin's own theorisings on evolution had largely taken their final form some fifteen years previously but he had been most hesitant about making them public !!!   Prompted by Wallace's memoir Darwin, in consultation with Sir Charles Lyell and Sir Joseph Hooker, agreed that there should be a public presentation of his own and Wallace's potentially dramatically controversial views.

In 1858, Wallace wrote an essay outlining his ideas on evolution and sent it to Darwin, who had not yet published his. Together they presented a paper to the Linnean Society that year. Although both thought that the human race had evolved to its present physical form by natural selection, Wallace was of the opinion that humans' higher mental capabilities had arisen from some 'metabiological' agency. Wallace was born in Usk (now in Gwent). While working as a schoolteacher, he met English naturalist Henry Bates; together they planned a collecting trip to the Amazon, and arrived in South America 1848. When Wallace was returning to the UK 1852, his ship sank and although he survived, all his specimens were lost except those that had been shipped earlier. From 1854 to 1862 he explored the Malay Peninsula and archipelago, from which he collected more than 125,000 specimens, and in 1869-70 he made an expedition to Borneo and Maluku. Wallace also promoted socialism, campaigning for women's suffrage and land nationalization.

One such case involved the English naturalist Alfred Wallace. Coincidentally, Wallace had simultaneously theorized Darwin 's now infamous theory of evolution . It contains much material by and about naturalist and social critic Wallace (1823-1913), including bibliographies, news items, commentaries, FAQs, a capsule biography, lists (e.g., of all the personal names that appear in his voluminous publications), and the full-text of about 200 of his writings (including several books) and interviews.
