Dirk Loew Die Karl-May- und Edgar-Wallace-Filme 2.3. Edgar Wallace Ähnlich wie Karl May war Edgar Wallace (1875 - 1932) ein Vielschreiber und zudem hatte er einen ähnlich bewegten Lebenslauf. Nach einer Karriere als Journalist widmete er sich der finanziell vielversprechenderen Produktion von Kriminalliteratur. In den zehner und zwanziger Jahren erreichten seine Bücher bereits traumhafte Auflagenhöhen, und Wallace - immer auf der Suche nach neuen Einnahmequellen- konnte erste Rechte seiner Werke an Filmproduktionen verkaufen. Die Verfilmung seiner Krimis begann bereits im Jahr 1919. Die bundesdeutsche Erfolgsserie war also nicht der erste Versuch, die Krimis für das Kino zu adaptieren. Da Wallace ungefähr 170 Romane im "Baukastensti" verfaßte, lassen sich, ähnlich wie bei May, einige immer wiederkehrende Elemente literarischer Struktur herausfiltern. DIF

In the years that followed his discovery of this winning formula, he published 173 books, and was briefly considered to be the most famous author of the 20th century. He wasn’t interested in making Great Art – his work merely strove to be popular entertainment, and is all the more successful for it. ("Three murders to the chapter" is a bit of an exaggeration of course, but it does give one an idea about the fast-paced brutality of Wallace’s novels.)
