Lewis Wallace, 1827-1905
*WALLACE, LEWIS was born in Brookville, Indiana, on April 10, 1827. Wallace grew up without benefit of a mother or a formal education, although his father was a West Point graduate and governor of Indiana in the late 1830s. Young Wallace organized the first Indiana volunteer unit to be recruited for the Mexican War. His reward was a second lieutenant's commission but to his dismay he served on the Mexican border far in the rear of the action. Returning to civilian life Wallace passed the bar examination in 1849 and was elected to the Indiana State Senate in 1856. When the Civil War broke out Governor Oliver P. Morton asked Wallace to serve as the state's adjutant. Wallace performed well in this assignment, then was appointed colonel of the three-month Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Assigned to Cumberland, Maryland, Wallace led his men on an 86-mile expedition and routed the Confederates at Romney, (West) Virginia. President Abraham Lincoln The Fair God, Wallace completed Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ in 1880. This book became the best-selling book ever published with the exception of the Bible. He was appointed Minister to Turkey where he started another book

Lewis (Lew) Wallace (1827-1905) was born to David Wallace, an Indiana Governor, and Esther French Test Wallace in Brookville, Indiana. Wallace was a lieutenant in the 1st Indiana infantry during the Mexican War, 1846-1847. In 1848 Wallace edited a Free Soil Party paper to oppose the election of Zachary Taylor for president because he believed Taylor treated Indiana regiments badly during the Mexican War. After the election, Wallace became affiliated with the Democratic Party. Wallace was admitted to the bar in 1849 and soon began practicing in Indianapolis. A short time later, he moved to Covington, Fountain County, where he was elected prosecuting attorney in 1850 and 1852. Wallace moved to Crawfordsville in 1853 and was elected to the Indiana State Senate in 1856 as a member of the Democratic Party. In 1861, Governor Oliver P. Morton appointed Wallace Indiana adjutant general. For his recruitment services, Wallace was commissioned a colonel in the 11th Indiana Regiment and distinguished himself at the battle of Romney. He was soon promoted to general and fought at Fort Donelson and Shiloh, 1862. He was also in charge of the defense of Cincinnati, 1862-1863, and was credited with saving the city from falling into Confederate hands. In 1864 he commanded a Union force of 5,800 at the Battle of Monocacy that held off an army of 28,000 Confederates and was credited with preventing the capture of Washington, D.C. Wallace was a member of the court-martial which tried the conspirators in the Lincoln assassination, 1865, and he was president of the commission that tried and convicted Henry Wirz, commander of Andersonville Prison, Georgia, 1865.

Lewis Wallace
Although he would have much preferred to be remembered as a highly successful military hero, Lew Wallace has been thwarted in this ambition and is best known as an author. Born in Indiana, he had worked as a clerk and early displayed a fascination for Mexico which would affect him in later years. During the Mexican War he served as a second lieutenant in the lst Indiana but saw only minor action. In 1849 he was admitted to the bar in his native state and seven years later entered the state senate.
With the outbreak of the Civil War he offered his services, and his assignments included: adjutant general of Indiana (April 1861); colonel, 11th Indiana (April 25, 1861); colonel, 11th Indiana (reorganized August 31, 1861); brigadier general, USV (September 3, 1861); commanding 3rd Division, District of Cairo, Department of the Missouri (February 14-17, 1862); major general, USV (March 21, 1862); commanding 3rd Division, Army of the Tennessee (February 17-June 1862); commanding 8th Corps, Middle Department (March 22, 1864-February 1,1865 and April 19-August 1, 1865); and also commanding the department (March 22, 1864-February 1,1865 and April 19-June 27, 1865).
At the close of the war he sat on the court-martial which tried the Lincoln conspirators and presided over that which sent Andersonville chief Henry Wirz to the gallows. He then joined a movement to aid the Juarez forces against Maximilian in Mexico. He tried to raise money and troops and even accepted the title of major general from the Juarez group. On November 30, 1865, he resigned from the U.S. service, but his Mexican venture collapsed and he realized little of the money which he had hoped to gain from it. In later years he was governor of the New Mexico Territory and a diplomat to Turkey. As a prolific writer, who often drew upon his own experiences, he is best remembered for

Major General Lew Wallace Lew Wallace was a lawyer, soldier, politician, diplomat, and author. He served in both the War with Mexico and as a Major General during the Civil War. He served Indiana as a state senator, was appointed territorial Governor of New Mexico, and Minister to Turkey. He wrote the novel Ben Hur , one of the most popular novels of the 19th century. Roger C. Adams, Rare Books Librarian, Kansas State University, when asked if Lew Wallace was a poet, responded as follows: Lew Wallace was, indeed, a poet. At least three of his poems were set to music. "The Stolen Stars" was written in 1863, published in Harper's Weekly (August 22nd) and then published as sheet music entitled, "The Stolen Stars." One poem from Ben-Hur was set to music and published as "Kapila." Yet another from Ben-Hur was published as "The Lament," "Egyptian Song," and "Song of Iras." Still another was published as "The Song of Tirzah" and "Wake Not, But Hear Me, Love." Wallace also wrote an epic poem, "The Wooing of Malkatoon," first published by Harper in 1898 together with his play "Commodus." To the best of my knowledge, the three poems from

    Lew Wallace:
Lewis "Lew" Wallace (1827-1905) was born in Brookville , Indiana, on April 10, 1827, to David and Esther French Test Wallace . David Wallace was an attorney who was elected governor of Indiana early in Lew's childhood. At the outbreak of the Mexican War, Wallace helped raise a company of volunteers for the service and was elected 1st lieutanant of the 1st Indiana Infantry. After the war, he was admitted to the bar in 1849, but never cared much for the life of a lawyer. In 1852, he married Susan Arnold Elston a Crawfordsville native and successful author in her own right. Following in his father's footsteps, Lew was elected to the Indiana senate in 1856, and moved from Covington to Crawfordsville , where he made his home for the rest of his life. Soon after the outbreak of the Civil War, Wallace served as adjutant general of Indiana. He requested a field command and received a commission as colonel of the 11th Indiana Infantry (a Zouave regiment) from Governor Oliver P. Morton. Wallace quickly rose to the rank of brigadier general and took part in the capture of Fort Donelson . At Shiloh , Wallace and his division became "lost" due to unclear orders from Ulysses Grant and their anticipated attack on the Confederate line did not come on the first day. Shiloh was the bloodiest battle yet of the Civil War and Grant, under pressure from Henry Halleck and the public, needed someone to blame. Wallace took the brunt of Grant's anger and soon found himself without a command.

The IHS is sponsoring the preparation and publication of The Wallace Papers , a comprehensive microfilm edition of the correspondence and writings of Lew Wallace (1827-1905), the Civil War general and author of Ben-Hur , and of Susan Arnold Elston Wallace (1830-1907), his wife, also a popular writer. The Society's goal in this work is to produce an enduring resource for the study of late-nineteenth-century cultural history. The varied careers and broad interests of the Wallaces suggest that their collected papers will be consulted by researchers in several disciplines and fields. To ensure such an outcome, the Society intends to photograph and publish the edition independently. The microfilm edition will be composed of three series. The first, the Chronological Series, includes correspondence, speeches, topical writings, and other papers by, to, or concerning Lew Wallace and Susan Arnold Elston Wallace. The second series will be devoted to Literary Works, and will reproduce some 20 intact manuscripts including that for Wallace's autobiography, draft and printer's copies of Ben-Hur , several versions of The Fair God , as well as other prose and poetry by Lew Wallace and Susan Wallace. The third, and smallest, series comprehends visual documents, including original art and designs, drawings and sketches, and photographs taken by and of the Wallaces.
