http://www.falmr.org/wallace.htm
Lewis Wallace Although he would have much preferred to be remembered as a highly successful military hero, Lew Wallace has been thwarted in this ambition and is best known as an author. Born in Indiana, he had worked as a clerk and early displayed a fascination for Mexico which would affect him in later years. During the Mexican War he served as a second lieutenant in the lst Indiana but saw only minor action. In 1849 he was admitted to the bar in his native state and seven years later entered the state senate. With the outbreak of the Civil War he offered his services, and his assignments included: adjutant general of Indiana (April 1861); colonel, 11th Indiana (April 25, 1861); colonel, 11th Indiana (reorganized August 31, 1861); brigadier general, USV (September 3, 1861); commanding 3rd Division, District of Cairo, Department of the Missouri (February 14-17, 1862); major general, USV (March 21, 1862); commanding 3rd Division, Army of the Tennessee (February 17-June 1862); commanding 8th Corps, Middle Department (March 22, 1864-February 1,1865 and April 19-August 1, 1865); and also commanding the department (March 22, 1864-February 1,1865 and April 19-June 27, 1865). At the close of the war he sat on the court-martial which tried the Lincoln conspirators and presided over that which sent Andersonville chief Henry Wirz to the gallows. He then joined a movement to aid the Juarez forces against Maximilian in Mexico. He tried to raise money and troops and even accepted the title of major general from the Juarez group. On November 30, 1865, he resigned from the U.S. service, but his Mexican venture collapsed and he realized little of the money which he had hoped to gain from it. In later years he was governor of the New Mexico Territory and a diplomat to Turkey. As a prolific writer, who often drew upon his own experiences, he is best remembered for Ben Hur.- A Tale of the Cbrist, one of the most popular novels of the nineteenth century.

(A) First WE would suggest " This Mysterious World of Ours ." [THE MYSTERIOUS UNIVERSE by Sir James Jeans?] Next we would take the electrical transmissions that have been prepared by those that are rather in manuscript form (which may be obtained through the associates of the body), connected with the Edison laboratory. Next we would take some GENERAL information of one or two different authors or writers on research in the field of radio, its causes of static and the means of transmission. Any one, or any author of repute. There are several in those that have been prepared by some of the associates of Steinmetz [Charles Proteus Steinmetz - 1865-1923]; some of those as of Steuer [GD's note: Pronounced STOR, like the famous lawyer in '20's, Max Steuer] some of the same nature, see?

The United States of America…One Nation Under God! Have you ever heard of Lew Wallace?
Lew Wallace (1827-1905) was an American military leader and writer.
He was a major general in the Civil War, and a member of the military
court that tried those accused of conspiring to assassinate Abraham Lincoln.
He was an atheist until he really started to investigate the whole God thing.
His novel Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ won him a worldwide reputation
and was a tribute to the complete turn-around of his beliefs. To this day,
Wallace’s legacy stands solid - a soldier who honored God with his life!
The Unit Ministry Team of the 2 nd Battalion of the 12 th Calvary recently held two great events. In September, we enjoyed our second Prayer Luncheon. The luncheon was held at the Grey Wolf Room of the Holcomb DFAC. Special guests were CH Colwell, the Division Chaplain, and Ms. Kurzyniec. CH Colwell delivered a soul-searching message on the unique plan that God has specifically designed for each individual. His message reminded me of the words of the prophet Jeremiah: “For I know the plans that I have you,” declares the Lord,“plans for welfare and not for disaster to give you a future and a hope.

Pioneer History by Richard C. Schmal
The Mexican War
(from the June 29, 1988, Lowell Tribune , page 15) A few years after the Lake County pioneers settled in Lowell, they were saying goodbye to their sons, sending them off to fight in the Mexican-American War. The war between the United States and Mexico (1846-1848) grew out of recognition of the independence of Texas by the United States in 1837, its annexation in 1845, and boundary rights between the two countries. Regular United States troops numbered 30,954, aided by 73,776 volunteers, with a total of 4,023 killed or wounded. During the first part of the conflict, the U.S. forces were led by General Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), who also fought in the War of 1812. He later became the 12th President of the United States, but served only 16 months of his term before he passed away. Jefferson Davis was his son-in-law, and a grandson was an officer in the Civil War of the 1860's. General Taylor led a detachment of regular army to Texas in 1845, they were attacked by the Mexicans April 1846, and Congress declared war on Mexico on May 13, 1846. On May 30, 1848, the war was ended with a treaty of peace signed at Hidalgo. General Winfield Scott (1786-1866) was another famous U.S. general in the war, and was also a veteran of the War of 1812. His aide was General William J. Worth (1794-1849), leader of the fighting at Molino del Rey in September 1847. Other officers were Col. Stephen Kearny (1794-1848), who died while serving as military governor of Mexico City in 1848, and Col. Alexander W. Doniphan (1808-1887).

60. Chapter Chapter 7 Of Index By Simonds History Of American Literature
Lew Wallace (18271905), the author of Ben Hur, was a native of the state and madehis home at Crawfordsville, the Hoosier Athens. He served in the Mexican

was the author of more than forty books, including important studies of Italian history and several plays. Of his novels it is conceded that those depicting Italian life and character are the most valuable; and of these, three, constituting the Saracinesca series, are the best. Mr. Crawford died at his villa in Sorrento, at the age of fifty-five. Gertrude Franklin Atherton (born 1859), a Californian by birth, has lived a cosmopolitan life here and abroad. Her early novels were written in the nineties; of her later works The Aristocrats The Conqueror Ancestors (1907), and The Tower of Ivory (1910) are prominent. Perhaps the best known of our writers from the South is Francis Hopkinson Smith (1838-1915), a native of Baltimore. A versatile master of several arts, including the substantial one of building lighthouses, his first success in fiction was the fine character sketch, Colonel Carter of Cartersville Tom Grogan Caleb West (1898), and The Tides of Barnegat (1906) are all realistic studies of the people whom the author may have known when living the practical business life of a building contractor and mechanical engineer. The Fortunes of Oliver Horne (1902) is said to be reminiscent of that period in Mr. Smith's life when he was an art student in New York. His later stories
