WALL—WALLACE, A. R. A full account will be found in volume iv. of Coxe's Memoirs of the Kings of Spain of the House of Bourbon (London, 1815). Further details of his early career can be gathered from the Diario del viaje a Moscoyia, 7727-7730, of the duke of Liria (vol. xciii. of the Docu-mentos ineditos para la historia de Espa.no), (Madrid, 1842, et seq.). The word " wall eye " or " wall-eyed " is applied to a condition of the eye, particularly of a horse, in which there is a large amount of white showing or there is absence of colour in the iris, or there is leucoma of the cornea. It is also applied to the white staring eyes of certain fishes. The word has no connexion with " wall " as above, but is from the Icelandic eygr, vagi, a beam, sty in the eye, and eygr, eyed. WALLABY, a native name, used in literature for any member of a section of the zoological genus Macropus, with naked muffle, frequenting forests and dense scrubs. With respect to their size they are distinguished as large wallabies and small wallabies, some of the latter being no bigger than a rabbit. From the localities in which they are found they are also called brush kangaroos. See KANGAROO. WALLACE, L.

Tirzah Messala, a Roman citizen; Judah's childhood friend, and later hated enemy Arrius, a Roman commander Simonides, an aged Hur servant Mallach, Simonides' servant Story Overveiw (The tale begins with an account of Jesus humble birth, the adoration of the infant by three sages from the East, and the child's delivery from the hands of King Herod.) Several years following Jesus' birth, Judah Ben-Hur was one day on the streets speaking to his childhood companion, Messala. Messala had grown up in Judea, but five years earlier had left to study in Rome. He had changed considerably in those years, and since his return Judah had found it difficult to speak with him. A wall had been cast up between them. Now, while Messala bragged, Judah grew more and more angry at his friend's new arrogance. Finally he erupted: "You have given me suffering today by convincing me that we can never be the friends we have been - never!" Thus they parted. Alone in his room, Judah brooded. Although Messala's attitudes were insufferable, there was some justification to his pride. At least Messala now had a military profession; Judah had nothing. After much thought, Judah concluded that he himself would go to Rome, learn the arts of war, and return to drive the Romans out of his land. He would tell only Tirzah, his sister, of his plans.

Esther came to his side, and put her hand on his arm, and answered, "So wilt thou best serve the Christ. O my husband, let me not hinder, but go with thee and help."
If any of my readers, visiting Rome, will make the short journey to the Catacomb of San Calixto, which is more ancient than that of San Sebastiano, he will see what became of the fortune of Ben-Hur, and give him thanks. Out of that vast tomb Christianity issued to supersede the Caesars.

The Jebel es Zubleh is a mountain fifty miles and more in length, and so narrow that its tracery on the map gives it a likeness to a caterpillar crawling from the south to the north. Standing on its red-and-white cliffs, and looking off under the path of the rising sun, one sees only the Desert of Arabia, where the east winds, so hateful to vinegrowers of Jericho, have kept their playgrounds since the beginning. Its feet are well covered by sands tossed from the Euphrates, there to lie, for the mountain is a wall to the pasture-lands of Moab and Ammon on the west-lands which else had been of the desert a part.

Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ
Author Info: Lew Wallace
In one of the most unique parlays in human history, Lew Wallace was not only a significant Union General during the Civil War, he also wrote one of the best selling novels in all of literature. After the war, posted to a deadly dull Western fort, Wallace began writing to fill the empty hours. Prompted by a casual discussion about the life and times of Jesus, he set this great story of revenge against the backdrop of Christ's mission. Judah Ben-Hur is a Jew of Jerusalem. Arriving at manhood, he has become estranged from his childhood friend Messala, a Roman noble. The two exchange bitter words and when Ben-Hur later accidentally dislodges a roof tile which strikes a Roman official, Messala has him sent to the galleys and his mother and sister, Tirzah, sent to a leprosy infested prison cell. As he is being led to the ship on which he will be enslaved, Ben-Hur is offered a drink of water by an unforgettable stranger. Onboard ship, Ben-Hur befriends the Roman admiral Arrius and, after saving his life, is made his heir and a citizen of Rome. Several years later, wealthy and well educated, Ben-Hur returns to Judea to look for his mother and sister and wreak his revenge on Messala. Vengeance comes when he vanquishes Messala in a chariot race, but his family, freed from their squalid cell and suffering from leprosy, hide from him. Meanwhile, Christ has come to Jerusalem preaching to increasing crowds and Ben-Hur, recognizing the kindly stranger who once helped him, becomes a leader of a group of armed guards bent on protecting him. His devotion becomes all the more complete after Christ heals Tirzah and his mother. But when the time comes, Ben-Hur heeds Christ's wishes and does not intervene. He does manage to return the long ago favor and give Christ a drink and remains to bear witness to the crucifixion. The story concludes with the increasingly wealthy Ben-Hur using his riches to fund the catacombs of Rome from which Christianity would emerge to conquer the Empire.
