like a ghost, thro' narrow passages Walking, feeling the cold walls with her hands. William Blake, Fair Eleanor The drowsy eye, half-closing to the lid, Stares on OTRANTO's walls; grim terrors rise The horrid helmet strikes my soul unbid Ann Yearsley Horace Walpole (1717-1797), fourth Earl of Orford, son of Sir Robert Walpole, introduced and named the genre with The Castle of Otranto: A Gothic Story Educated at Eton and King's College Cambridge. Between 1739 and 1741 Horace Walpole toured France and Italy with his friend the poet Thomas Gray (1716-71). On his return to England, Walpole become a Member of Parliament Shortly after taking up his seat, Walpole leased (1747) then bought (1749) Strawberry Hill in Twickenham, London. Following his purchase, Strawberry Hill was remodelled in Gothic style, something resembling the set for a Hammer Horror movie. It was the Gothic atmosphere of Strawberry Hill that led to the writing of The Castle of Otranto . One night, early June 1764, Walpole fell asleep in the gloom of Strawberry Hill and had a nightmare. The nightmare became The Castle of Otranto Horace Walpole: I waked one morning at the beginning of last June from a dream, of which all I could recover was, that I had thought myself in an ancient castle (a very natural dream for a head filled like mine with Gothic story) and that on the uppermost bannister of a great staircase I saw a gigantic hand in armour. In the evening I sat down and began to write, without knowing in the least what I intended to say or relate. The work grew on my hands, and I grew fond of it - add that I was very glad to think of anything rather than politics - in short I was so engrossed in my tale, which I completed in less than two months, that one evening I wrote from the time I had drunk my tea, about six o'clock, till half an hour after one in the morning, when my hand and fingers were so weary, that I could not hold the pen to finish the sentence, but left Matilda and Isabella talking, in the middle of a paragraph.

Mathew Lewis
Dreams, magic terrors, spells of mighty power, Witches, and ghosts who rove at midnight hour. Horace What do you think of my having written, in the space of ten weeks, a romance of between three and four hundred pages octavo? It is called 'The Monk' ... Mathew Lewis, letter to Frances Lewis, 23 September 1794 Mathew Lewis (1775-1818), commonly known as Monk Lewis due to his authorship of The Monk (1796), was educated at Westminster and Christ College, Oxford. Whilst still a student at Oxford, Lewis visited Paris (1791) and Weimar (1792). In Weimar, Lewis met Goethe. Originally published in 1795, The Monk was a sensation. It was savagely attacked by the critics for its sexual explicitness and blasphemous nature. In subsequent editions, Lewis, now a Member of Parliament, was forced to tone down the text. There was an attempted legal action against Lewis for his attack on public morality. As with all such 'obscene' publications, the public flocked to buy it in order to express their moral outrage. Riding on the success of The Monk , Lewis embarked on a second career as a dramatist.

Walpole, Horace, eigentlich Horatio Walpole, 4.

Sources: Horace Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford Walpole, Horace: The letters of Horace Walpole, Earl of Orford. London, 1840. 6 v. Horace Walpole , 4th Earl of Orford (1717-1797), was a noted author, historian, connoisseur, and amateur architect. He was a member of the House of Commons from 1741 to 1768, and was a keen observer of politics and society. Though his Anecdotes of Painting in England (1762-63 4 v.) is still useful to art historians, and the Castle of Otranto (1764) is a minor landmark in literary history, being the first Gothic novel in English, Walpole's fame now rests on his letters, of which over 3,000 survive. Historically, they are 18th century England's truest record, portraying social life, public affairs, and contemporary arts and letters with wit, vividness, and accuracy. As an architect, he is most famous for his country house Strawberry Hill, near Twickenham, which he remodeled into a miniature Gothic castle. Horace Walpole. Engraving by James McArdell after the portrait by Joshua Reynolds (1757). In: Walpole, Horace: Horace Walpole's Correspondence.
