Thomas Tanner (1674-1735) , Fellow of All Souls (1697), Canon of Christ Church (1724), Bishop of St Asaph (1732-5), antiquary and ecclesiastical historian, bequeathed to the Bodleian his mss and such printed books, not already in the library, as the library should think fit to accept. The printed books, c960 vols. containing c.1,800 items, date from 15 th th cent, but are mainly 16 th and 17 th cent. They include many early and important books, particularly examples of English 15 th and 16 th c. printing, such as works printed by Caxton, and theological works by the Reformers and their opponents, many being scarce tracts in the vernacular, and also Civil War and Interregnum pamphlets. Tanner’s books suffered damage from water when being moved from Norwich to Oxford in 1731. Most were uniformly bound (c.1820), but none of the fly-leaves (which he may well have annotated) have survived.

    Sir Stanley Unwin
Letters, 1888, 1914-1966 The letters of Sir Stanley Unwin (1884-1968) were acquired by Washington State University Library by purchase through the Sotheby sale of July 23, 1976 (lot 24). The forty-one letters were processed in August 1976 by Roberta Stokes. BIOGRAPHY Sir Stanley Unwin (1884-1968) was an author and head of the English publishing house of George Allen and Unwin, Ltd. which he established in 1914. A strong proponent of international cooperation in book matters, he served as president of the International Publishing Association, 1936-1938 and 1946-1957, and traveled extensively throughout the world collecting information on organization and publishing techniques from booksellers and publishing houses. DESCRIPTION AND ARRANGEMENT OF THE LETTERS The letters are arranged in a single sequence, alphabetically by the last name of the writer of the letter. These letters were, for the most part, received through the firm of George Allen and Unwin Ltd. and concern publishing matters. It may be assumed that Sir Stanley chose to separate them out from his business files (note, for example, the pencilled instructions on Priestley's letter to make a copy for the file) because these were letters from the now or soon-to-be famous and he wished to keep them in his personal files. Indeed a number of these large horror anthologies were published in the 30s, collecting much of the best British (and some American), horror, mystery and thriller fiction of the late-Victorian and Edwardian eras. Hutchinson, for example, published the massive (1000+ pages) The Evening Standard Book of Strange Stories A Century of Creepy Stories , and A Century of Ghost Stories . Montague Summers edited his famous The Supernatural Omnibus (1931), Dorothy L. Sayers her Great Short Stories of Detection Mystery and Horror , and John Gawsworth his Creeps series. What can I say, they don't write them like they used to. list of authors gives one a good idea of the quality of the writers presented. Even so, there are some stories by lesser known authors which are also very good. My personal favourite, A.J. Alan's "The Diver," a tale of a haunted diving board at the pool in a men's club, isn't particularly atmospheric or well written, but is interesting for its unique venue and the skeptical character who tells it. There are tales of Voodoo (W.B.Seabrook's "Goat-cry, Girl-cry"), horror at sea (W.H. Hodgson's "The Voice in the Knight"), detection (R. Austin Freeman's early Dr. Thorndyke tale "The Aluminium Dagger" and Baroness Orczy's
