Student Reviews: Regarding the Fountain Amelia A. at Chesak Elementary School It starts out that Dry Creek School has a leaking drinking fountain, so they call Florence Waters to replace the leaking fountain. She starts writing letters and being a pen -pal to Mr. Sam N's fifth grade class. Soon Sally Mander and Dee Eel find out that Florence is replacing the fountain. They get nervous that their secret might be discovered and they decide to take action! Meanwhile, Florence is giving gifts to the class, so they decide to invite her to Dry Creek Days. Then Minnie O. leaves her tape recorder in a locker and it records that Spring Creek is really in the leaking fountain! In the end Sally M. and Dee E. go to jail because of smuggling Spring Creek into the fountain. Dry Creek is rewarded with a new fountain, thanks to Florence. Melanie G. at Chesak Elementary School There was a girl named Goldie, and at her school, her principal's name was Mr. Waters. Goldie was a helper for Mr. Waters. Whenever someone did something wrong, Goldie would write notes to the principal to get them a detention. If Goldie was not at school, her friend would take over this job. The Review
Dry Creek Middle School is in need of a new drinking fountain. When Principal Walter Russ contacts Florence Waters of Flowing Waters Fountains, Inc., it sparks a series of letters that involve Mr. Sam N.'s fifth-grade class, as well as Sally Mander, owner of the Dry Creek Pool, and Delbert "'Dee" Eel, owner of Dry Creek's water company. Plans for the fountain escalate as the fifth graders uncover a scandal in the town, which used to be known as Spring Creek. This epistolary style book is comprised of letters, memos, news clippings, telegrams, faxes, and more. (To say more would take away from the fun of the book.) This book is sure to bring smiles and giggles! The Activities
  • Use the letters, memos, telegrams, postcards, etc. to demonstrate different forms of written communication. Students can write their own written documents to characters in the book.
    • Printsville
Students can visit Printsville online for help, or can use a Print Shop program to help them write their letters.

How could a simple request for a new water fountain go so very, very off-track? When Principal Wally Russ writes to fountain designer Florence Waters to ask her to replace Dry Creek Middle School's busted drinking fountain, he little suspects that he is sparking the imagination of an artiste . Kate Klise's charming mystery novel is told entirely in letters and faxes, as the glamorous Florence visits Dry Creek and becomes friends with Mr. Sam N.'s fifth-grade class. The class helps Florence design the most outrageous water fountain ever, and along the way uncovers the dirty (and rather wet) secret that dwells underneath Dry Creek Middle School. Writes Florence to her new fifth-grade friends, "Your drawings are hanging in my studio. Pure inspiration. Of course a drinking fountain should have tropical fish and chocolate shakes!" The book reads like an inspired combination of the epistolary novels Daddy-Long-Legs and . Line drawings by M. Sarah Klise adorn every page, with "snapshots" of the fifth-grade class, pages from the local paper, and coffee-stained While You Were Out notices thickening the stew. The emphasis on visual elements should make the book a hit with kids who claim they don't like to read. Author Klise knows her audience: bad puns flow as freely as water and the plot is just convoluted enough to challenge kids without frustrating them. The Klise sisters have created a classic of comic children's literature. (Ages 8 and older)

Submerge students in a world of water

by Valerie Lewis W ater has a personality all its own. It can take the form of a stagnant lake, a tranquil stream, a raging waterfall, or an endless ocean. It can be a light mist, torrential downpour, or blinding blizzard. Without it, land dries up, crops wither, and animals dehydrate. But if there is too much of it, entire towns can be swept away in an instant. As you and your students dive into these fiction and nonfiction books about water, you'll be thirsting to learn more about this essential element.
